Yes it's a Phasmatodea or Walking stick bug. Haven't seen one in years, pretty cool though.

Believe it or not they live in the water. I catch them all of the time while seining crayfish.

Nope. This is a walking stick, and they live in the woodlands. The water insect you are thinking of is probably the similar looking "water scorpion". Neat find, and just an example of some of the cool things we see when out trapping and scouting.
