Is is a law that some traps have to have different pan tension or is choice or preference

pan tension is ones own choice,what ever works best for what is being targeted. however it does state in the n.y trapping guide that foot holds 4" and over set on land must have a pan tension device and be covered when set . hope this helps

Here's a simple way to check pan tension. Set your foothold trap. Fill a 20 Oz soda bottle with water. Raise the loose jaw and set the bottle upside down on the pan. If the trap doesn't fire, loosen the pan til it does fire. Leave the tension at that point, close to 1 lb. If you want it heavier, tighten about 1/4 turn.
