Most Hardwood beams come in 5", 6" or 7" widths with the 5" being small enough for most muskrats. Personally, I prefer a wider beam because coyotes flesh out faster on a wider beam in my opinion. Shipping can be expensive, so make the trek to the NYSTA convention in 2 weeks and pick one up there

I'd go with a 6" x 48" inch beam. I know F&T has 5 or 7", look around and see if you can find a 6 inch. Try www.snareshop.com/prodinfo.asp?number=FHBEAMGet a two handled fleshing knife, the best you can afford. There is a world of difference between an $8 knife and a $60 knife. However you can get by with a cheaper one until you can get a better one. I know you have plenty of questions and nobody near you to assist, you really should try to attend the NYS convention over Labor Day or any other convention you can get to. You'll cut your learning curve tremendously by getting out and talking to dealers, other trappers, seeing demo's, etc. Only so much someone can help you with through a forum.

I got a 6 in. beam from Renno's ( Juniata Valley Trappers Supply ) in Penn. this yrs. cat. has got them listed for 20 to30$ depending on length , also their boards are great. As far as the knife spend the money on a necker , you may make a couple of holes at the start but the learning curve is fairly short and it saves a lot of headaches when you run into an old coon or the grisily back of the beav. that was or wasn't planed for . Good Luck , join SwampTalk.com , The best forum for the trapping community going. Also the founder JC has got some really good vids. on YouTube.

Should see you there . There are a lot of great people there that will give you as much help as you can ever ask for . Besides your topic on fleshing beams has been popular lately , so there are a lot of threads going . JC has a beam made withddifferent PVC toppers that just slip on.
