This depends on how far back you want to go the older books would be rated "R" and would probably not be sold just anywhere. Thus the beginning of the tradition of trappers never really making any money at their chosen occupation.LOL

Seriously most of the early history of trapping in this country is very scetchy as those who were involved were also our early explorers and settlers and although there was mention of them being trappers in books written about them there is very little detail about their trapping activities. There is more published about the rendevois that they attended annually to sell the furs and a lot of them left broke borrowing money for a grubstake for the next years endevors. As a result they were always in debt to the fur buyers and whisky peddlers but a great many of them were happy with this lifestyle.

I got these from Paul Grimshaw, but there may be other sources.
"The American Fur Trade of the Far West", Vol. 1 & 2 By Hiram Martin Chittenden
"Fur Traders Trappers and Mountain Men of the Upper Missouri" Edited by Leroy R. Hafen
"Trappers of the Far West" Edited by Leroy R. Hafen
"Mountain Men & Fur Traders of the Far West" Edited by Leroy R. Hafgen
"The Fur Trade of the American West, 1807 - 1840" (A Geographical Synthesis) By David J. Wishart
Most are biographical sketches of various trappers/mountain men such as Jim Bridger, Jedediah Smith, Peter Skene Ogden and Kit Carson. They also give a glimpse into the Rocky Mountain Fur Company, The American Fur Company and others.

A friend gave me a book called "The Trade" about the Hudson Bay Company in western Canada. It was mostly about the interactions between the fur traders and the natives and didn't include a lot of specifics about trapping itself. Interesting nonetheless.
