Thanks again for all the encouragement as our season is winding down...I don't need to tell anyone that a "successful" line is a lot of responsibility and a lot of hard work, with sometimes very busy schedules and unfavorable weather conditions. For some, including us, well worth the effort for the experiences and memories! Below are a few pict from the last few days...
Colton with a red fox caught in a hay set using advice, lure, urine, and bait from AJ…thanks again AJ! Caught him the night before the Springville auction…he was auctioned off on his board!
Another pict of the fox.
Colton was contracted by my Dad to catch mice and squirrels around their house (the rodents are causing lots of problems). He gets $1 for each day he checks his traps (28 days without missing a trap check), $1 for each mouse, $2 for each mole, squirrel, etc. Colton invested $19 in traps and has netted $28 for checking traps + $10 for squirrels + $4 for mice + $2 for a mole + $2 for a possum! This is a great way to help him learn the importance of managing money. The pict below are eggs from our new chickens!
Possum caught by Colton…with Carly’s help!
Another pict of my proud kids holding up their possum…I’ll use this pict to blackmail them when they get older.
Possum one more time…not sure what the yellow was from … we think that the possum was playing dead on the road and got a road line painted on him.
Some of Colton’s squirrel collection. I’m always stressing the importance that we should use as much of each animal we catch…we practice skinning the squirrels and have sent one of the flying squirrels to a forum member for tanning…thanks Redbonechick for the offer to tan Colton’s flying squirrel free of change! We will be sending you some more squirrels soon…also some other critters from some of my friends should be headed your way! We also give the heads to another forum member (bassd83) for his beetles in exchange for a couple of the cleaned skulls…good “show-and-tell” stuff for the kids at school!
A mink-cicle caught using a 110 in a blind set under the creek bank…a member sent us a mink trapping video…after the video we set a few dry blind sets…after a couple weeks, we caught this female mink!
Another pict of the mink. Even though the mink was not very big, this was one of our most rewarding catches! As “newbies”, it was very exciting to catch a target animal…we wanted to catch a mink in this particular set, and after weeks and weeks of checking the traps and resetting due to freeze/thaw conditions, we caught a mink (and a grey squirrel a few days earlier)!
Carly taking a break after a long snowshoe hike on our trap line!
These are some logs we set on a trail…unfortunately we didn’t have a trap set here when the fox came walking by…next time!
One of my best friends checking traps with me…this is his first year trapping…patently waiting for his first catch!
More beaver sign (fresh mound of mud)…unfortunately the creek is now frozen solid so I’m not sure if I’m going to be able to get this beaver! I caught two beavers in castor sets at this location (including our 60#’er!). We would like to get as many beavers out of our creek as possible…we planted over 5,000 trees over the past several years and the beavers are starting to encroach on them.
Fur batch number three ready for the Springville Auction!
Colton and my friend’s son Lucas at the fur auction.
Pict of random fur ready to be auctioned off.
Another pict of fur for auction.
Colton’s “score card” of our fur. Good times and happy with auction prices! Also great to meet some people on this forum (Chico) and others from Erie County Trapping!
Hope you enjoyed our picts and I hope to post a few more if we can get some critters before the end of the season!
Good luck on your trap line!
