Just wondering what traps you all use for yotes and the occasional fox, I need to buy a couple dozen new ones this year, and was thinking KB's but just want opinions. Thanks

Double coil. I use victor traps and a couple others that I really don't know since someone gave them to me.

I really like the few KB's that I have. Also use Sleepy creek and some Victor soft catch but see more damage from the soft catch.

Whatever your wallet will allow . KB's are a investment like any other tool. I have switched to KB's and have a order in for 2 doz jakes to try . The KB trap is worth every penny ! If you want to try the jake trap get on the waiting list they are in Texas till march trapping and orders will start to be filled in the spring.
Good luck

mb 550 or bridger #2 fully modifyed are some nice traps after adding a shock spring!!!! No doubt the MB is a good trap, but with a 4 3/4" inside spread I feel it's a bit small to specifically target yotes with...

For traps you can use straight from the box with no mods....you can't beat laminated KB 5.5's. MB 550's are nice but after you add a shockspring & extra swivels you're about at the same price as the KB's.

Aren't #2 bridgers too big for land trapping here in NY?

I ran a dozen MB 550 closed jaw alongside a dozen KB 5.5 dyed and waxed out of the box this past season set for coyotes primarily but caught coon, badger, coyote and bobcats equally with both of these traps. I will say though the KB is a Cadillac. The low pan says step here and when they do they are sunk deep and going nowhere. However I caught a few also in 1 3/4 Modified OS Sleepy Creek that were "backup" traps and held them ok but every dog was crunched unlike the 550 or the KB (dogless). One thing I learned through the years.. look at your equipment as an investment buy what you can afford but always be ready to upgrade when able.

HUNT AND FISH YOU NEED TO LEARN HOW TO READ A TAPE MEASURE MB 550 HAVE A 5 AND 3/4 INCH JAW SPEAD AND ARE NEW YORK STATE LEGAL AND I PERSONALLY CAUGHT WELL OVER A HUNDRED YOTES IN THE TRAPS OVER THE YEARS. Then you def better stick with trapping and not reading.. A tape measurer or the written word for that matter..1st off.. Huntandfish said INSIDE spread and nothing about not being legal (MBs).. And they (the MB 550s) do not have a 5 3/4 inch anthing.. I quote " The MB-550-RC Double Coil Spring Cast Offset Jaws Trap is designed for use in taking coyote, bobcat, fox and raccoon. This trap has an outside jaw spread of 5 1/2" and an inside jaw spread of 4 3/4"." The MB 650 (not cast jaw) with inside lams ADDED is 5 3/4". A Bridger #2 is ok no matter stock or lam'd.. A #3 Bridger needs inside lams to be legal.

Wow I did not know this, I thought they based it on the dimensions of the base trap model before any mods. I guess when I read guys using 650s for coyotes, and me saying wow that's illegal, I was the wrong one.

Yep... Adding inside lams does the trick.. I forgot to add my trap choice.. Yote being main target.. #3s.. Either/or (fox or yote) a Victor FOJ #3, Bridger #2 or a Monty #2 RJ.. All offsets and 4 coiled. I am giving real thought to selling all my babies off and getting nothing but Montana #3 offsets. Legal right out of the box and adding 1/4" lams and base plates... Oh.. I will keep my KBs.. I am sick of dogs on my traps.. I would get MB-650s IL but I actually like the loose jaw for bedding reasons.

I KNOW WHY IV'E BEEN QUIET AROUND HERE TO MUCH BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT EVERYONE IS PERFECT LIKE AUSTIN YA KNOW. well I'm not sure how I made it to a coyote traps discussion, nor have I ever once said anything about always being right about anything. I offer up opinions and field observations with catch pictures to back up said posts. In the past I've been outright ridiculed and taunted for the number of sets I can run, the baits I use, the choice of digging slight depressions for fox sets, etc. Outright ridiculed... until I began posting catch pictures that to my knowledge were not bested by ANY of the said detractors with so many pointed opinions about me. ** Other than that, I find myself posting less with a diminished desire to post much at all... simply because too many trappers who haunt message boards are way more catty and insecure than ANY other outdoors oriented men I know. There are reasons why accomplished trappers like flatiron and zagman amongst many others post d@mn little now versus years past. Anyone care to guess why that is?

MB 550 and 1 3/4 sleepy creek are both quality traps. I use them both on private property but for public land trapping I go with dukes to cut my losses from theft.
