I wanted to thanks everyone for their direct/indirect help getting my son and I up to speed for this year’s trapping season. It has been more than 25 years since I set a trap...now, in my spare time, I'm back at it with my 9yr old son Colton (and he loves it!). Below are a bunch of picts to share from our fall 2012 trapping/fishing/hunting season! Colton catching dinner/bait with fly rod Selfbow deer taken with Colton at my side. Carly and Daddy heading out on a hunt... Success! Learning how to skin a beaver (thanks Bob and John Reynolds) First two beavers we caught! Lots of beavers! Colton ready to set! Mink set (caught two so far). The site of Colton's first muskrat (thanks to uplandguide for his generosity in helping Colton get his first #1 LS traps!) Colton with his first muskrats! He has never been happier! Help from Carly combing fur. She is ready to try skinning her first muskrat. Mentoring Colton on his first skinning job (no holes!) Colton helping with beaver. Louisville beavers (6 caught in two days using 4 traps) More beavers…two in the middle were 50#...was not able to get weight on big guy to left (probably over 70#). Heading out to check traps with our trapping baskets that my wife made us for Christmas! Success with hay set. Breaking in new trap basket. One of two red fox we caught this season! One of three gray fox we caught this season in cubby sets. Fur from our first visit to the trading post! The family heading out to check the trap line on snow shoes.

Thanks for the kind remarks everyone! I will let my wife know about the comments on the trapping baskets and see if she can get one made for the photo contest - either for this year or next year. She donates her weaving works often...this past fall she donated a great basket quiver to our archery club (Hawkeye Bowmen). As you can imagine, they are very time consuming.
Regarding the bow making...I (together with Colton and Carly) have made over two dozen selfbows...we use local wood (mocker nut and shag bark hickory, iron wood (i.e., hop horn bean), black locust, cherry, maple, elm and most recently ash (backed with carp skins from a carp I shot this past summer). The bow in the pict is a bow I made from Osage and backed with rattle snake. Colton's last bow was backed with deer sinew (hind leg)...figured we would back his bow to learn the process because it was much smaller than mine. The whole family is equipped with bows of our making and basket quivers from my wife. We also make primitive arrows from red dog wood (hand bent for several weeks during the drying process and heat treated over a camp fire to harden), with self nocks reinforced with sinew and halved with trade points using pine tar mixed with rabbit droppings and wrapped with back sinew...I usually gift these arrows to friends who donate their primary turkey wing feathers to me...hint, hint... I can post a couple picts of the bows, arrows, and quivers if you would like.
Thanks again for the nice comments...we love being in the woods as a family and trapping fills in some open time between fishing, canoeing, and hunting!!
Happy New Year!
Dino
PS. I shaved my traditional hunting beard around Christmas time...Amy threatened to shave part of it off while I was sleeping if I didn’t groom it!

Hi TMC...sounds like we should compare notes! I would like to try the bitternut hickory. You should try the mockernut…it is said to be the best of the hickory woods for bow making. I'm active on Primitive Archer as well as TradGang and debating if I'm going to enter the bow swap again this year (sign up ends on 1/7/13 and the bows are due by July 2013). …I have the same use name if you want to look me up. Not sure where in NY you are but if you are in the Buffalo area next April, you should consider coming to our primitive shoot (three days of mid 1800's fun!). Search Youtube for "Hawkeye Bowmen" and you will see the woods walk I ran last year...as well as a couple of our annual snow shoe shoots...they wanted to tie an anchor to me last year! I'm trying to come up with a trapping related (mid 1800's time period) seminar to set up for next year’s shoot...maybe skin and put up a beaver…in the “woods walk” I had the 6 people who made the cut make a figure 4 trap (as well as fire starting, hawk throw, arrow making, log chopping, bear rope throw, plant/rock/animal track ID, etc…about ten events total). Lots of fun for all! Hope to see you there!

Again, thanks everyone! My wife Amy agreed to make a trapping basket to donate to the 2012/2013 photo contest! If by some chance my son (or I) were to win the photo contest, the basket will go to Dale for him to determine a good place for it. Also, the trapping basket Amy will be making will be medium sized (like the one Colton is pictured using above)...note the trapping basket is large enough for an adult (because I have used it) but ideal for a kid in hopes that the winner can use it to encourage a kid to get involved (or continue) trapping.
