Just wondering what I'm doing something wrong if my coon hides split when removing them from the board? Attachments:

Did you have a belly board in?

Yes. The whole drying process. It happened to two out if three. It's virtually impossible to pull the board up. So I've been having to push the fur down.

Maybe try a bigger belly wedge. About 3/4" on one end tapered down to 1/4" on the other about 3 feet long. When the fur is dry remove the wedge. Bounce the pointed end of the stretcher off the floor once if you need to. Maybe hook the nose on a stiff nail and pull on the stretcher. MB

Oh yeah, make sure your stretchers are not wider at the shoulders or they will never come off. MB

I'm kinda thinking like Mole. Sounds like your drying hot and fast but I'm guessing. Are they splitting while drying or when you try to remove them? Curious.

One of the things that has helped me in the past when I had fur stuck like that is to slam the nose of the board on the floor. It tends to jar the fur loose more often than not. .

They were drying in a unheated damp basement (except for what little heat generates from the hot air furnace). The one pictured was on the board for a couple of weeks. When it was removed it was still a bit greasy, I wasn't sure if that's normal but I didn't want to split it like the one previous but obviously that thought didn't pan out. I'll try the ideas suggested. I'll dry subsequent ones in the outdoor shed. See if that helps.

ive gone to all adjustable wooden stretchers so theres 2 seperate pieces of wood, collapse when hide is dry, also wood slats (2) can be removed independently if hide is being "stubborn"
