Waiting on my order from trap shop. Hopefully it'll be here by first week....I have some beaver castor left over from last yr. Have some beaver fat/meat, about 10 gray squirels, and some mink lure....Think this will get me by until i get the right stuff? Anyone have some pointers on trapping cat....Any sets work better than others.....

Never targeted either of them, but I would not hesitate to use beaver scraps for either, castor is very attractive to just about all fur bearers.once your on location you're 75percent there, after all wasn't it curiosity that killed the cat?

Hi...
Regarding fisher bait/trapping...last evening I read an EXCELLENT article in the new The Trapper's Post...which explained how a 'unique' twist on the water set was bringing in fisher, fox and coyote...!!

Fresh/frozen beaver [fist sise minimum chunk], castor and heavy skunk above head level. Cats and Fisher are big sight hunters so dont forget the visual appeal that will grab their attention from a ways off. Oh and dont waste you time with the squirrels lol.

I was making coyote sets the year before last and kept catching fisher in one area over and over with Night Owl: Crossbones if that helps at all. Darn things loved it

Quickest way to get venison is to watch for road kill. Remember even road kill has to be tagged.

You can probably get some fresh venison scraps from a local deer processer.

I think a good bait for fishers is porcupine, fishers love porcupine!

I agree nyhunter, fisher are basically the only predator that will actually hunt quill pigs. I think the porcupine is unprotected in ny. A fisher will keep jumping back and forth right over the quillpigs back and the they will eventually get so dizzy they roll over and expose their vulernable belly. I catch (non-target) and release several fisher every season in my k-9 sets using meat based bait and k-9 gland lure.

I haven't heard that they jump over them, but I have heard that they run around in circles around them making them dizzy and they fall over and eat them. Never heard of them going for the head, they still have quills there?

Dear Friends, A fisher kills a porcupine by making, repeated, biting attacks to its face. Eventually the porcupine will bleed out enough and tire to a point where the fisher can kill it by either biting its throat or merely start eating it through the belly. It's very rarely a quick process! Regards
