Hey all this year i was going to start fleshing more of my own pelts and one problem i have is that they kind of smelt and i am going to be hanging the hides in my dad's garage and he is very picky. i read in one of my books that you can take baking soda and water and it will take the smell away from bottles and stuff i was wondering if before i put a pelt onto a stretcher if i could wash it in baking soda and water to take the blood, smell, and other stuff off of it. also will this work with a skunk too? Thanks

Properly fleshed pelts shouldn't have any strong odors while drying....unless the critter was stinky to begin with ;D If you're concerned about that, you can wash them in a mild detergent or woolite before you flesh them but you'll need to dry them completly before fleshing and then drying them or you'll end up with fur slippage and and even worse odor. If you don't flesh them well enough you can get odor as the fat & excess meat, etc. does give off odor. To remove skunk odor, you can wash them in equal parts of hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and and few drops of dawn dish soap.
