As we all know theft happens too much on our lines......I thought I would start this to help new trappers learn how to limit it............such ways as hiding traps, sets, and once an animals caught.........I'll start by saying avoid culverts, or set up stream from the culvert, when able to do so........many thieves will peek down in the culvert

When I trapped up in the mountains i use a terquois back pack,i tried to look like a hiker.I set light when I water trap an unknown area, don't want to lose too many at once. I buy cheap water traps because of the high turn around. The thing that works the best for me is haveing a reputation of being someone NOT to steal from.

If possible, follow around Mark Zagger on opening day. Learn his locations.
On a serious note.......... Use J-hooks and cable stakes

find a way to mark your traps- a way only you know.. dont set in an area that would or could catch any unwanted critters or there owners.

I can't wait to set someone up this year, call the police and press charges, and then spread their name on every forum possible! The season can't come soon enough!

I try to set as many water traps as possible so someone would need hip boots to get at them. This eliminates most deer hunters, hikers and dog wakers. But, when the real thief is also a trapper, your done.

I had someone steal a conibear I had set up for fisher/bobcat in the adirondacks this year. I think it might have had something in it because it snowed the night or two before. Another trapper two hundred yards away got robbed as well!

Not kidding... They dug the cable stake up.. Now anybody who knows the rocks and shale in Rennselaer County.. That took some doing.. The other trap 20 feet away.. They left it there I guess digging 24 inches once in that crap was enough for them!

I try to do my checks in the dark before work. A lot of my stuff is just over the bank so it's quick. I try not to be there more than 3 to 5 minutes and if I could do it quicker than that I would. On the cap of my truck I put stickers like paddle the Dacks, I love Loons, things like that so people think I'm a tree hugger. Alot of my traps are either earth anchors or two inch fence staples. The only place I use wire is in the water. The biggest thing is get in and get out. The less time your there the less people see you. Thats why I like the dark. good Luck..
