Last night my family and I are on our deck playing with the dog and my neighbor is outside also a couple acers away. Its about 730 pm and all of a sudden my dog gets pissed and starts growling and barking in the direction of the woods. Every hair on his body is standing up. Suddenly a bear comes out and looks right at us all. He slowly and calmly walks over to my chicken coop. Now we are all yelling at the bear and carrying on to get it to go away, but that little bugger was on a mission. He went and ripped a panel off the coop and grabbed a chick with his claws walked back the way he came. Not a worry in the world.
My wife is scared to death now no matter how many times I told her that the chances of a bear attaking a person is slim to none. I called the DEC to try and report the nuisance bear and they were not to keen to hear about it. We have a lot of bears around and we see them a lot and they get into the trash some times. No biggie. But this SOB showed some balls. Small bear to boot. DEC said to call them back if he does it again. I called the local PD to make a report, cause if I have to shoot this stupid bear, I want some documentation that it has a history ya know? CYA.
Spent most of the moring fixing and reenforcing the coop. He grabbed the lead hen also. So pissed. Thx for looking.

Mikespring, I do know that. Did not have a suitable weapon readily available last night. I do now. Called authorities cause I wanted to cover my butt a little if it comes down to it.

Good Luck, I wish you the best. I have had bear trouble in the past. NYSDEC told me that I was teasing the bears.

We had some bear problems in elk camp in northern New Mexico one fall. DNR issued rubber slugs and buckshot (not sure if legal to use as a harassment tool in NY). But let me tell you when that bear showed up on the porch the next time he got a butt full of rubber and a good verbal lashing from the guys at camp and we didn't see him for the rest of the week. Disclaimer....not sure if this is legal in our state. I would be concerned about this individual bear and my family and K-9 companion.

I am very concerned now. Especially after he got a chick. He knows to come back now.

I am very concerned now. Especially after he got a chick. He knows to come back now. That, I think will be the big problem.. Somehow that bear is not afraid. For some reason.

Sorry to hear about your Bird. It seems like the Bear is on a big come back in N.Y. everywhere. Yesterday had one (200+) in a tree in a back yard in North Greenbush about 2:30 in the afternoon. This is the 3rd or 4th bear seen in the capital area in the passed 2 weeks.
Good Luck with that chicken thief!!!!!!
