Papabear other than on conis I much prefer chain because it seems to be much easier to handle and is easier to work with on sets.Easier to conceal and just sometimes to get cable to stay where you want it not to mention if you have a little extra for the particular location cable is sometimes a pain. This is just from my experience and I am shure there are others who love cable.

Papabear Friend, I have a lot of experience w/cable from many yrs of snaring(NJ).I tried it at a few sets (NY) last yr. I have found that cable kinks very easily and is much harder to get to lay the way you want it when tryin to hide/cover it no matter how you secure/stake it. I have sometimes spent more time tryin to cover/hide the anchor cable then makin the actual set. You cannot just lay it/pile it under a trap like you can w/chain.This is just my opinion based on my experience, that is why I just bought another 100 ft of chain for here in NY. I have plenty of cable but chain is much faster/easier for me

Papabear, I don't replace trap chain with cable, but I do use a lot of cable extensions to tie off my trap. I don't have any issues using this method. Only time I ever had any problems with the 1/8" cable kinking is when I hooked into a bear. Still, the cable was usable and held as it was ment to.

I asked the same question to Mr. Mole because he uses alot of drags on his mink line. Said it can kink and break.

papabear----I use lots of cable----but not to replace chain -----use mostly 1/8 in. to tie traps down----trying to cut down on people taking them----I think it has worked to some degree---- but thats only a guess. Only get a average of 2 years out of a cable ---then it starts to rust---( I am not talking earth anchors here.) ---Had Tom Stalker build me a 4 ft driver to use beaver trapping----guys like to pull the anchors and run on the northern rivers---figured it may save a trap or two---but the cable (in the ground) is going to be a total loss.-------- SO ---I dont replace chain with cable---it kinks ---rusts----dont last in general----I use it as an extension and on earth anchors.

I use cable to extend to a rock, tree etc don't worry about hiding it use drags when I can and replace the cable after a catch held everything so far chain is heavy-cable is light and cheap and reliable, I use to use the disposable stakes but found that they will not be consistent in this gumbo and where the cats are is pretty much a rock pile-had to change the way I trap its the same only different!-Tom

Papabear. I use chain always on footholds. Cable used only for drowners and on coni's to prevent theft. Cable has a mind of its own and can be like a bad hair day. ;D Peace

I would want to keep chain at the trap myself but for extensions and the like cable is fine.I have seen where coyotes bite and chew on the trap and I would be nervous about cable attached directly to the trap.Plus you would have to check and be ready to change out any damaged cable in the field, could be a hassle.

I can tell you that I have had some old timers up here tell me that a large coyote can chew right through cable.

I am a firm beliver that cable has no business fastened to a foot trap. You will never make anything bullet proof when it comes to trapping.check this out. this is what is left of a welded D ring on a short chained trap with a large angry yote in it. Every thing else at the set held up perfectly and I did wind up with the yote Attachments:
