I've been messing around with inadequate length stakes for use in the big, deep Cattail Marshes along the Eastern Lake Ontario shoreline for years using too short of stakes, Lathe, and other half measures to Visually Mark and fasten my traps to the bottom. I always ended up cutting green stakes which the beaver stole and never thanked me for, and generally was unprepared for Muskrat trapping in the "Stake Department" come late October. I have had my eye on a fine grove of Staghorn Sumac which the Highway Dept had Clear Cut from the road right of way two years ago and has now grown straight and tall, and perfect for long, visible, strong, light Marsh stakes. I finally spoke to the Landowner today who gave me the go-ahead to "HAVE AT IT" and cut them down. I cut my first installment of stakes in the rain today using My trusty Beaver Feet lopping shears and got a nice first truck load. I should have done this in early April, but they will have all summer to season. They range in size from six to twelve feet tall. Priceless Commodity for the Big Marsh Rat Trapper. Thanks for looking. Stay tuned. walleyed

dried, seasoned sumac stakes are best in the world for muskrat trapping... when dry, they are almost weightless but plenty stiff that said, under no circumstances EVER use them green where beaver may be found. beaver will swim a mile out of their way to feed on green sumac shoots. matter of fact, rats will girdle the bark on green sumac stakes in the water, too
