this morning i went out before school where i knew some bird were. i set up on the tip of a finger of woods in a pasture i didn't hear anything till 6:30 when three birds gobbled to a crow. i started calling and for about 20 minutes they kept hammering back. then i heard some clucks behind me and there was a hen. i took the safety off think a gobbler would be behind her but there wasn't. she stayed behind me for about 10 minutes. when she left i saw the 3 gobbles going down the field the other way. so i got up and ran down into the creek bottom and snuck up the other side. i stuck into about 70 yards of them then layed down. i kept a 3 foot ridge of dirt between me and them and belly crawled up till i was in line with then. i pocked my head over the dirt and saw they were about 40-50 yards out. i came up again with the gun ready and waited for the dominant bird to come out of strut. when he did i shot and dropped him. he had a 9 inch beard and 3/4 inch spurs. i am taking the bow out in the morning to try for my second of the NY season.
