I was reading on the internet about the wild pigs here in NY, the DEC want to get rid of them all, they say if you have a small game license you can shoot and keep anytime, 365 days a year. I'm wondering if we can trap them? I would like to build a cage trap and trap them to fill the freezer.

Because they are a non-controlled animal, I believe you can trap them. I'd check with DEC to be sure. If you do, good luck. I raise hogs so here are a couple pointers. They are extremely strong and if they can get their nose in or under something they WILL destroy it. Becareful, they bite!

I asked the DEC and this is what they said. Technically it is not prohibited to use a cage trap for feral swine, however it is illegal to feed deer, moose and bear in New York or put out any food that is accessible to deer, moose or bear. Therefore, you cannot use any bait for feral swine trapping that would attract or be accessible to deer, moose or bear. Since bear eat just about everything feral swine do and bear (especially cubs) can get into traps set for feral swine it is going to be very difficult to trap for feral swine in NY. If you do trap for feral swine we ask that all swine be killed prior to release from the trap and that you report all feral swine seen or taken to the DEC.

Swine are no joke...i work on a farm that raises pigs and the little guys are incredibly strong, fast and smart , and the big boars, when they look at you they almost seem as if they are staring right through you ...but the sow with a litter will kill you if she gets a chance, they have no fear and at 300 plus pounds...that is the last thing i want to walk up on in the morning checking traps or anytime at all. If they do come, which they will, i will be hauling 6 plus more pounds with me every morning"the Redhawk".

A couple of years ago a show about the "Hogzilla" boar on the history channel showed a USA map and a finger of wild boar populations all the way up to Canada. They then said within 10 yrs there should be boar populations in all the lower 48 states.
