Hey guys, could anyone tell me what each critter went for back in the day? I know there's a drastic difference from then and today but not sure how drastic. Thanks

In 1980 I was 14 and making as much on my trapline as my dad was working full time. A good yote was worth as much as $75 some jumbo coons were worth 30-40. We would run our line before school, skin till dark then run the dogs till midnight. if I tried it today It'd probably kill me!

I remember mid-late 70's getting $50 for reds, up to $35 for coon. Was trapping full time for a few years back then, we racked up the rats which probably averaged $6.50 or so. If you could do 20 rats/day you were making $130/day, you couldn't make that much working an assembly line job at Ford or GM back then. Gas was around $0.62/gallon. Average wage index back then was $9500, today it is around $45,000. Got to put it into perspective.

mac ---you hit the nail sq. on the head----with 125 fox ----75 coyotes----120 coon ----and a few fisher ----muskrats ---mink---beaver and otter ---mixed in ----- A GUY COULD -----DREAM------ a years plus wages made in 6 to8 weeks ---- could --- DO THAT TO YOU--- THEN THE --- unfortunate dreamer woke up to family responsibilitys and the reality of the fur market. God bless the ones who did it ---- Grimshaw--Thorp----Wyshinski----to name a few from that time period. Today there isnt much of a chance ---EXCEPT TO DREAM.-----GOD BLESS THE DREAMERS

Bill you and I know where this is going to end up but I think even we oldtimers try to figure a way to come out a few bucks ahead when the market is going like this.So the point is that there is a little dreamer in all of us which is not really a bad thing.

I will have to admit that when you are out trying to nab every bit of fur you can and go to bed at night dog tired after putting it up it is not as much fun as when the market is down a little and you are out there trying to outwit a bait theiving grey fox or something just because you love doing it.

Some Fur Receipts from the 1970's. I mostly sold my furs locally To Country Buyers as soon I put them up as I was always scraping for money to keep trapping. As you can see, prices were a lot better if you shipped to the Ontario Trappers Association auction back then but the wait for your money killed you. v walleyed

Walleyed ----You make an excellant point (IMO) we as trappers owe it to our selves to research the markets ---and get the best prices for our fur that we can.

Walleyed...those prices posted by the Ontario Trappers Assoc. are canadian funds correct? I assume by reading the receipt that the prices posted are canadian and then payment is made in American. What was the exchange rate then?

What was the exchange rate then? I honestly can't remember from that long ago, But I remember MR. PEANUT was president, The Iran Hostage Crisis was going on, and I think the American Dollar was tanking at the time. I'd bet the Canadian Loonie was worth more than the American greenback at the time. walleyed

I can remember during the fur boom late 70s early 80s getting $140 for a fisher $80 for red fox $40 for real good coon and rats avg.about $6 and some as high as$8.I was much younger then and didn't mind trapping from before daylight until after dark and then outting up fur.I also remember that back then we were trapping coon in cubbies around corn fields with 220s and taking huge numbers of them.

You would probably do great if you can live on hardtack and beans and figure out how to run a longline off a Honda scooter.
