I am from CT and am planing to trap NY this year. I was wondering if anyone road traps in NY and what the laws are about setting traps on the side of the road under bridges ect. Can u set on any state land? Can u set on property that is not posted ect.

NY is one of the top states in U.S. for number of licensed trappers... and most of them are definitely R.O.W. mode of operation. There is a lot of fur to be caught here in this state... but you'll need to get away from the roads and work where few others do. If you plan on basing your state-hop efforts on ROW locations, you will be greatly disappointed. What species are you targeting? Why don't we start there and steer you in the right directions

Good luck finding open culverts and bridges that someone isn't trapping especially on state land........best bet is to take a trip and lock up private land

Also your looking for trouble if all or most of your sets are near the road by bridges /culverts, not everyone is honest like the folks on this forum(trap theives)....by the way welcome to the forum.

Competition near the road would be heavy for sure but no one can stake claim to culverts year to year. Unless its on private ground. If you get there first then you should be able to set it. Thievery might be higher there as mentioned above. Most state land is settable but there are certain circumstances where you cant. That should be looked into by you in the area that plan on trapping. I trap near some very heavily traffic areas and keep thievery to a minimum by being as discreet as i can be when setting/checking. Get in ,get out and keep to yourself when possible. I agree with Austin that you could do better back in a ways but not knowing your time constraints that may or may not be an option for you. To trap in this manner for a vacation line and experience different trapping ground you would probably make a fair catch but your not going to beat the locals who know the area . I talked with a trapper from Conn. at Neil Olsons a few years back and the rules that you have to abide by there are crazy. To be honest i dont know how anyone does trap there. It sure makes me apreciate the freedom that we still have here to trap thanks to NYSTA. Also your best bet to find out the regs in Ny. for trapping would be to contact the NYDEC directly. Good luck on your lines.

Welcome to the Forum! As already stated, you can legally set culverts, bridges as stated in the NY Trapping regulations unless the land is posted. In NY, even if land isn't posted it's considered private property and you must leave if asked to by the landowner. It would be wise take a road trip through the area that you plan to trap and obtain permission rather than try to set unposted land to save yourself heartache. State land is plentiful and while some areas are very heavily trapped, othes aren't... especially is you park and walk a little bit. No matter where you trap, plan to lose a few traps as there seem to be more and more thives as the price of fur goes up.

I will def take a few trips to try and secure some private land and do some homework on the state land in reach. time is not a problem I work for my self ( have a tree business ) so no work in winter and I would take the time off to trap if there was. I trap hard for everything for as long as I can. I live 25 min from the border and with the laws here in CT I would rather spend most if not all my time in NY. Does anyone know of any good state land close to the Amenia / Millerton area that would be where i would cross into NY. I am a respectful trapper and am not some blundering idiot so u dont have to worry about me stepping on your toes or causing u problems if i am in your area. I do my best to stay to my self and dont mind walking I prefer to get off the beaten path. I just dont know where to start but have all summer to figure it out. Thank you for your help.
