Alot of it is personal preference im sure...Myself I like to keep things short, I figure it gives them less running room, less momentum to get a pullout...longer chain lets them get into more things, allowing leverage...my own opinion though

i prefer long chains with shock springs. Coyotes will jump, almost like a quick hop right above your stake when you use a short chain cuse its pretty much all that they can do causing them to pump your stakes out. long chains with the shock springs allow for them to pull at an angle making it alot harder to work the anchor out of the ground.

The majority of my Coyote traps are KB's which I use stock straight from the box and they have a short chain....haven't found an empty trap yet so I guess they work My other K-9 traps have about 12-15 inches of length from trap to stake which includes a shock absorber, swivels and chain tieing them all together. One reason I like a shorter chain is that it makes for a smaller catch circle and since I've gone to cable stakes I've never had an issue with coyotes pumping the stakes out like they did with rebar.

Longer chain can give a trapper more options when it comes to snow trapping and constructing sets.

As for length, I dont have a real preference, although I buy the "running room" thing. What I have changed my mind on after trapping New England is chain versus cable. Guys up in Maine have told me that they have had coyotes chew right through cable, and I have seen it in a DVD or two also. Any stakes I use next year will be fitted with some sort of chain for sure.
