I told my son that when he took his hunters safety course, we would purchase him a shotgun so now I am looking for a good shotgun combo that will last him a lifetime but not break the bank. Is there any such thing out there? Any guys here buy a shotgun for a 12 yr old to hunt deer, ducks, and turkey with?
12 gauge or 20 gauge?
Thanks Woj

20 guage Remington 870 youth model... you can always add a full sized stock when he grows out of the youth size.. durable and dependable

1. What do you shoot? Does he like your gun? 2 A Twenty may kick a little less but a Twelve has a larger shot pattern and he would be more likely to hit the target. Hitting the target will cause the recoil to be less noticed.

after you get a gun....buy a trap.
The thrower and clay pidgeons are cheap and fun
Learns to be a good shot plus it's good Dad & Lad time

Spilt the difference and get a nice 16 guage ;D If you can, have him shoot different gauges and see what he prefers...just remember, a semi-auto will have less recoil than a single shot or pump model. I started out with a single shot .20 and while I killed a lot of meat with that gun, I really liked my 1st 12 guage auto I bought a couple years after that much better, especially on ducks

I don't think you can buy a shotgun for a 12 year old and expect it to be a lifetime gun for him. Unless you buy him an adult size gun which will be difficult for him to get up quickly into proper shooting position due to improper stock length/comb, etc. At 12 years old I think you must consider a youth sized gun. The Rem is a good choice, there are quite a few out there. Avoid the single shots as their lightness allows a hard kick even in 20 gauge. Go with a pump or auto. As for gauges if a 20 gauge I'd recommend go with one chambered for 3" as they make some nice turkey and slug loads in the 3" 20 gauge.

get a 870 12. light target loads will not kick. a 2 3/4 steel duck load will kick less out of this gun than the youth 20 ga with will be shooting 3 inch. the 2 3/4 12 has the same amount of pellets as the 3 inch 20. plus 12 ga ammo and accessorys are more abundant than 20 ga. my first gun was a 12 Remington 870 express. i use it for everything except deer.

Nick... Try the Gun Genie... Then you can get an idea and see what each as to offer.. Get a $$ idea and look at reviews by doing a search. I found the one I am getting the GF that way. A 20 semi for her.

Gotta agree with Wayne on the semi deal....Im kinda a Remington fanatic anyways but I would go for a Remington 1100 LT20...I still grab mine once in a while just since it is so lite compared to my 12 gauge 1100...like runnin around with a BB gun during deer season !!

My Dad gave me a Savage Mod.24 over /under. It a .22 over a 20 gauge. Its been 40 years and I still use it. I have used it from here to Alaska for all types of game. I also carry it with me on my line. I gave my nephew one about 5 yrs ago.

Can't go wrong with a Mossberg 500. I'm 42 and used mine pheasant hunting yesterday. Purchased when I was 16. My brother has as well. Still his deer gun of choice. I only have a 28 mod. with it and have shot plenty of turkey with it at some long distances (12ga.). Reliable gun and doesn't break the bank. My cousin used my Uncle's 870 yesterday. My Uncle bought that gun when he was 16, now he's 62. Good reliable gun as well. My cousins and one of my brothers each received I believe HR 20ga. single shots when the turned 12. 2 of them including my brothers was in action yesterday, he's 32. They all love them. IAnd still use them to hunt small game. Single shots teach you to aim-IMO. Only one shot. Food for thought.

Thanks guys. Sounds alot like asking a guy about what his favorite trap is;) I was leaning towards the 870 youth combo. He shoots my Benelli nova with no problem. Maybe I should give him my 500 and then Dad gets a new gun Our church put in a shooting range and trap so we shoot there on occasion. Thanks again for all tot suggestions. They will come in very handy
