Would this be a good fox trap if swiveled, shock springed, and a double stack bracket......also what would be the effects with a coyote catch with the trap.....eric

If you intend to catch many 'yotes with it, you'll need to baseplate and bubbletip the jaws to stiffen them up a bit...lams wouldn't hurt either.

I tried using Duke #2s baseplated ect on coyotes and they are marginal on large ones.

if you plan to buy duke #1 3/4 traps, then spend all the money to mod them, you would be better off just buying a better trap in the first place.

I want to use them for fox and not coyote but chances are high catching a coyote.....will they tare the trap apart or will most pull out? Eric

Unless you baseplate and bubbletip them, they WILL destroy your trap...maybe not everytime, but more often than not.....not agood choice in my opinion

I think the Duke 1 3/4 as you described will catch and hold fox without a problem. However, they have strong springs and sharp edges and are harsh on the fox, especially if not baseplated. They need to have the edges filed at minimum. As others have stated a coyote can trash this trap so if you think the likelihood of catching yotes is high then not a good choice due to the number of mods needed. If you desire a true "fox trap" with the odds that it will hold and not be trashed by a coyote and is not harsh on the fox look no further than the MB 450.....IMO. Money well spent, ready to rock out of the box.
Speaking of mods including baseplating and especially lams, has anyone read the recent interview with Pete Askins in the Trappers Post? Everyone should read that. Some great info in there if you're considering lams and four coiling.....and why you shouldn't or how it should be done. Seems these days everyone is buying over-sized 4 coiled traps and laminating them to bring them into legal size....and Pete talks about some important considerations if you are thinking that way. Great read.

I cannot understand why anyone trapping here would choose to trap k9s with 1 3/4 when for a couple of dollars more you can buy a #2 size trap. The last thing I want are educated animals and I will do all I can to ensure that if they put their foot in one of my traps they will be there when I get back. The # 2 offset jaws do not do any more damage to foxes than 1 3/4 not even on the greys.

Good point "Z".....and actually the Sleepy Creek 1 3/4 has a larger jaw spread (5 9/16) than most #2 coils, which are typically 5 1/2. The MB450 I refer to in my earlier post is a 1 1/2 size trap and I love it for fox.

oldeman, i dont want to rain on your parade, but when i was a young man i couldnt afford coyote traps.......caught alot of coyotes in 1 1/2 montys........just because a trap costs more or everyone else is using it doesnt mean it is needed.......trap placement goes far and a young man with little money becomes a good trapper when he as very little.......eric

Eric...you're not that much older now ;D and you'll loose FAR MORE coyotes in a #1 1/2 or # 1 3/4 than you'll catch over the life of that trap. A #1 1/2 is a GREAT fox trap, especially the old Monty's and I've caught coyotes in them, BUT I've also watched 2 coyotes pull out walking up to the set as well as the 1/2 dozen traps that were laying in pieces at the set after a coyote literally ate them for breakfast...Unless you like to waste money, spend the extra from the start and buy quality equipment, it will last a lifetime if treated with care
