I would request that all NYSTA members take the time to fill out the Trapper's Survey and return it. It can be found inside the latest issue of the "Trap - Lines" newsletter. The JTI Committee is conducting this survey of our membership in so that we can better serve you now and in the future. We value the opinion of every member. Thank you.

Mine sent......would have liked to have seen a question regarding the closing of the rat season here in the southern zone. As was mentioned in another thread it would be nice (and make sense) to have the season extended from Feb. 15 to at least March 15th......made comments on my survey regarding that. Others here in the southern zone should do the same if you're thinking is the same.

mac... I forgot all about that. Al, could you please send my survey back to I can edit and resend to you? <lol> seriously though, that's a good point to make. can we send attachments or separate suggestions = comments apart from the actual survey itself? regardless whether rats are $12 or $2 I'd like to be out there this time of the year in my general area. Many others would, too

Austin and Trappermac, I certainly will add your comments. These are exactly the kinds of comments we are looking for. Feel free to send any after thoughts along. Austin I know what you are talking about. Where I live we still have an open rat and beaver season. This year all of the streams and marshes are ice free, only a few of the mountain beaver ponds still have ice. The beaver and rats are beautiful this time of year and I'll chase the rats until they start to get cut up. Rat glands are swelled right up. Thanks for submitting the surveys. I hope to compile the answers and report on that after the filing period.

Al, my truck is loaded with traps and I can be in Queensbury with daylight left to work with. Should I bring Bob along with me, or don't we want him showing us up too badly with all the catches?
He's probably too busy with all that auction stuff, anyways. We'll handle the rats without him! <laugh>

Austin, Trouble with this area is that there are no good concentrations of rats; certainly not like up north along the river. A bit too cold to fish lakers, so I'm just puddle jumping for both beaver and rats, blind sets and scent mounds. Just enough to keep this old dog occupied. Need to take out a loan just to pay for the gas. Better leave Bob home; he'd talk the ears off a brass monkey!

... Just enough to keep this old dog occupied. Need to take out a loan just to pay for the gas. I hear that... for the next few weeks I'm going to commute from Naples to near the Canadian border and parts in between, every other day. Days in between are motel stays on location, wherever that happens to be. A tank of gas and packed lunches or a motel room and road food: at $8 rats averaged, I need ten per day to almost breakeven. Fewer than that and I'm spending the winter fur check to have fun this spring!

I'm looking for a used pickup that gets 60 mpg. These gas prices are killing us. Skinned my first cut up rat this evening. Next one I catch I'm going to call it a day.

I'm pretty sure I skinned some in Dec and Jan so shredded up that they made yours look select clear by comparison. Rockwood saw them in living color finished... gets a might crowded for muskrats in the ditches here mid-season. They don't like that at all.
