Wayne, was it ever brought up about the change to water trap check limits?
I would love to see it change from 24 hrs to 72 hrs, WATER SETS ONLY! I realize 72 is asking too much, but 48 hrs would be reasonable.
I could double my mink long line with this scenario. A 24 hour check puts a huge limitation on mink trappers.

That was discussed and a good point was made that water is water whether it's in the adirondack's or the finger lakes. I believe that will be addressed at the same time as seasons.

Not sure, but it was something that Dave was going to look into further.

I would take mink trapping much more seriously if they'd give us the 48 hrs.
Rick.

11-1105 Procedure. The 24 hr.trap check is a law.It is covered in the same paragraph in which the trap tags are covered. Season dates are set by regulation, under a law which gives the DEC authority to regulate the seasons.

I would be in favor of a 48 hour check for water sets also. It would help with beaver trapping here as well, especially when we have ice to contend with. Hard to chop holes and walk around on the ice and not spook the beaver. I agree also with the others on mink trapping as well.

I think a 48 hr water check would be beneficial. Now, from left field: I would like to see a beaver extension and 48 hr check in areas subject to tidal influence. The areas I trap beaver are tidal and that means that trap checks have to be at low tide which only comes once every twelve hours and advances an hour every 24 hrs. For a working man this has me checking traps at un-Godly hours. If low tide is at 2pm that puts me at work and I must check my sets at 2am.. Combine that schedule with early freeze (shelf ice) and flood tides. It is not reasonable, safe or productive.

Jim, does that mean DEC Law's must be changed through legislation or ballot box initiative or both? Seems to me we could point out some ambiguity in the current law to amend it, it's done all the time in tort law.

Dale, don't even breath the words "Ballot Initiative!" Thank God we don't have that here in this State. If we did, it might be we'd be trapping with live traps, only if we were lucky! Seriously, it would need a legislative change and a governor’s signature to change it. As far a parity throughout the State, I feel our Assembly would likely force those areas with 48 hr tends into 24 hour tends. Just look at the 50-caliber bill that passes the Assembly the last couple of years. You can check in with Dave Miller for better insight than mine, but I bet he’d have similar reservations as to the outcome. Jim

I think a 48 hour check for water sets would be fine as long as its a conibear set or drowning set.other then that i don't like the 48 hour check for any type of trapping if the animal is left alive and in the trap for that length of time.If you can't check all your sets in 24 hour check then shorten your line or make them killer type sets.
