I have been kepping the dye I use from the start of the season in a 55 gal. drum. Then re-dying after the end of season and then keeping it until next seaon. My question is, is this a good idea or should I just throw it out and get new stuff every season? Thanks for any input. Hatch

As long as you don't get anything in it to contaminate it I would think it should be fine. I don't use a prepared dye so it doesn't cost me anything each year so I don't save mine.

Interesting question?? I was looking at mine the other day, its been sitting there since sometime in september, looks kinda green, but if yoiu stir it up it looks fine. I have always dumped mine out sometime when I know I'm done, as I put my barrel up( so the backyard looks a little better) But I don't see what it could hurt to keep it year to year, unless it really changes by weathering. Like I said good question.....B.....

Hatch, I use a combination of soft maple bark, sumac bark & berries and oak if I have nay available. Actually anything that has a high tanic acid content will work. I like to boil the contents first before adding any traps, it seems to make a darker dye. I have heard of some people tying the bark & such in a nylon bag to keep the small twigs and stuff from getting in the traps but it doesn't bother me. I let them hang until dry and then wax them. Once the wax has dried good I take an old file to the pan notch and clean them out to save time when setting. I then put them in clean rubbermaid containers that have a bit of leaves and dry dirt in th bottoms. I hit the the dogs when I set them with my sharpened hoe end and I'm in business.
