We have had the issue with the dog caught in the 220 and also over my way the coyote caught and "rescued" by the SPCA near the thruway near Tondawanda. My question is, why hasn't the DEC come out in support of law abiding trappers in those incidents? The one over here should have been possibly treated as a law enforcement issue, since the season was closed when it occurred. The DEC was never mentioned as being called in the news reports on this coyote's "rescue", and then it's latter release. But it sure was a great sound byte for the SPCA , and anti-trappers. I for one, do not like this wait and see approach on these incidents. We always seem come out as the dark side of wildlife management to the public. Are there any hook and bullet guy's left among the biologists in the current line-up?

I'll say it again-trappers in this state are plain lazy with their wait and see attitude thinking "it will never happen to me".One of these days we're going to wake up and find out it did happen and now we don't have a trapping season. The only time your going to see trappers come together on an issue is when they all meet at the local scrap dealer to bicker over the price of steel scrap-because thats all their going to be able to do with their traps.

Last year at our County Federation meeting I ask the DEC CO after they gave there talk about all the illegal beaver traps that were checked in region 8 and 9, how many trappers were ticketed? They did not know but said they would find out. This was almost a year ago and we never got a answer. We as trappers can only do so much in policing ourselfs, but here is probably a case of the DEC complaining about trappers and not doing there job in inforcing there own regulations.

Bobber, I know all about the dog in the 220. NYSTA has been all over this with a lot of communication with politicians and DEC.
This is the first I have heard about the coyote. Can you get me some information about this?

Dave, It was in Tonawonda, NY right in the intersection of the I-90 & I-290. Trap had no tag and the 'yote looked like it was hit by a car as well. It was after the season had closed but that doesn't mean that the trap was set illegally however. The SPCA took the animal in, stiched it up and set it free a few days later. It wa son the local news as well as the local papers. Not as bad about this type of publicity as on Long Island however, that's probably why you didn't hear anything about it.

If anyone hears about any instance that could harm us, please get the info to me. This way if I get asked questions about this I can give an answer on the subject. Just e-mail it to me. Even a link to the newspaper article. Thanks, Dave

Dave and Skinner, I was not referring to any apathy on concern over these incidents by trappers or the NYSTA. I am aware that Dave and the NYSTA is fighting the ban in S. Hampton. What I am saying is that the DEC isn't a presence at least publically, in incidents like these, and I believe they should be. I didn't see one of their representitives on the TV in this incident and it was on twice over a period of three or four days. The region 9 office is right in Buffalo. They are responsible for wild coyotes and their management and should have been onboard in that incident, not the SPCA. I feel that the DEC does not have our back, to put it bluntly, especially when it is not politically correct to do so. This is what my post was about , and I was wondering what others thought. The state of Colorado, for instance, lost it's right to trap because their DNR became populated with younger more politically motivated biologistists, and directors with no intrest in sportmans rights, and little practical experience. The older, sportsman oriented biologists and directors had either retired or were pushed aside because they were not on the same page in this enviromental culture war. Sportman's rights were put on the block at the polling places and they lost, with the blessing of their game department. I feel that the last few years have shown a simlar trend here in N.Y. Dave, the coyote incident was reported over on Trapperman, and the Bucket of Guts. I believe it appeared in the Buffalo Evening News on Feb. 27th of last month. It ran on our local channel 4, WIVB TV, during the following week.
