i was thinking of purchasing 6 #3 duke coilspring traps for coyote mostly and fox i know these would probably be a little oversized for fox but the should hold the coyotes well right? also i would probably catch fisher in these too. thanks for any tips. Ted

Those #3 Dukes aren't legal on land in NY unless they have been modified with inside jaw laminantions. The #3 Duke is listed witha 6" jawspread which is fine if set under water, but not on land. They would be way oversized on both fox & fisher as well, and you wouldn't be pleased with the results I'm afraid.

If you are lookng for a muti purpose trap for land animals generally #1.75 or #2's will fit the bill for you. I use mostly #1 3/4 Northwoods and #2 Montgomery's for my Coyote/Fox trapping and use a lot of #1 1/2 montgomery's if coyote's aren't likely and for fisher. A #2 will work for a front foot beaver catch but I wouldn't generally recomend it. Get yourself some 330 coni's and some larger doublelong springs for the beaver. They bed easier and have plenty of weight to help keep them under.

actually the Duke #3 are legal in NY......NY DEC specify the measurement to come inside jaws from the dog side to opposite jaw...
the measurement you see listed on most websites is from where the jaw attaches to the frame.
the Duke #3, #2 and #1.75 all have the same jaw spread by NY standards, which if i remember is about 1/4" below the state requirement.
personally with what you are going for i would try getting the Duke #2 maybe offest. move the chain to the middle of the frame, add a couple swivels and you should be good ecept for maybe a overzellous coyote. Dom
