I have a couple of coon hides I want to preserve and came across this recipe. Any thoughts on it or other sugestions...thanks, mark
You dont need to buy a kit. Are you ready for this? 1 remove all the fat and flesh from you hide All OF IT. 2. go to wal-mart or wherever and buy you a box of borax. 3 In a big enough container mix you a brine solution with equal parts borax and non iodized salt into the water. 4. Soak your hide at least 24 hours until it turns white. 5. take it out to dry and pull and stretch it often throughout the day. This will keep it from getting as hard as plywood. Ive done several small game and deer hides with this and its great. Costs about 5 to 10 dollars. Doesnt work well for snakes or fish hides though. Give it a shot.

I have a mink (my first) that I used this solution on 25 years ago and it still hangs on my wall. It is not flexable like a tanned hide but displays nice.
