Im seem to be having a problem on the trap line with 0 K9 catches so far. I am using Russ Carmen lures (NOT BAIT) that are over 10 years old that have been kept locked and tight in the shed. I always figured the older the lure the better it got.

It's not the lure, but the location that catches fur You can catch critters on a peanut butter & jelly sandwhich if you're on location ;D

Dear Friend, As long as the lure has not been exposed to eccessive heat or prolonged exposure to sunlight it should be fine. Like Mr. Jones stated, location is of key importance........By the way you'd be suprised how many coon, grey fox, and coyote ive caught over the years on smuckers grape jelly. Regards papabear

Thanks papabear. Our locations are on logging roads, power lines, hedge rows and edge of fields. We are only trapping in an area that is about 2000 acres in size. The area has been run hard over the last few years with coyote hunters running dogs. We have also had a rabies epidemic in the last few years with foxes biting people within this area. I have yet to catch one skunk this season which will be the first for me ever. All said I have seen K9 sign so Im not giving up hope.

Im about ready to give up. Not catching the yotes dont really bother me as I was never good at that anyhow. It's the lack of catching the greys thats bothering me. Ive never had a problem catching greys although it's been 10 years since I trapped them last.

remember..you can't catch what isn't there. You need to cover alot of ground to get a feel for your local canine population.
Family groups of coyotes shift from year to year & our current weather dictates travel, with unseasonably warm temps you have to be on top of 'em.
As far as gray fox...we haven't had a healthy population in about 10 years. I've only caught 1 so far. Parts of the state are diferent, but something happened to gray fox over the last decade.
Crops...I realize your part of the state isn't considered "farm land" so to speak, but alot of standing crops make it hard to catch anything, with the exception of targeting coon trails.

Don't forget to set with the wind in your favor....Gray fox will typically find your sets within the 1st or 2nd night and if you're targeting grays and not catching them, they probably aren't there

i'm still using some of my favorite Okey Butcher lure that is marked on the bottle .79. That's old !! His #4 was always a good grey fox lure and it's still working fine this season. I bought a bunch from his widow and Ray Dantley when they were selling out. Probably around 20+ years ago. All the other answers are correct. Got to be location.

remember..you can't catch what isn't there. This probably explains why the night time coon hunters and daytime coyote runners have disappeared here this year. I have not seen nor heard of anyone this season. Usually this area is hammered. Not so this season.
