Borax

Hi all, I have a another new guy question. I have read on here that some of you use Borax to help the drying process and aviod spoilage. Do I just rub it into the hide, let it settle and leave it? Or do I have to rub it on and then rub it off completely right away? And after the hide is stretched, dry, do I have to get the powdery Borax off completely? or just wipe it a bit? Thanks for the help. Good luck to everyone. I will post my first catch..........if I get one lol.

The "wet" leather of the hide will grab all the borax it needs. I rub it under the drooping front legs and into the split tail to make sure it gets in there.
I have a long wooden box I built that pretty much lets me lay the coyote in there full length and just roll it in the borax.
Once dry, I dont take the time to wipe it off or anything. No furbuyer yet has turned down my stuff or downgraded it due to borax usage. This goes back at least a decade or more.....

Thanks Zagman. Anyone else ever use borax with any results, good or bad? thanks. Don't use Borax on Coon. It's pretty much standard on K-9's.

Zags do you save your borax in that box from year to year? I opened a tub I had used on yotes last year and whooooo did it smell nasty.

I use borax on all my k-9s'. It does make things a heck of alot easier when you handle them Just one time.
I also, like mark have a long wooden box.I put the whole coyote/fox in it and rub/roll the k-9 through the borax.
I keep my borax from year to year in the long wooden box.I do nothing special to it,when it comes to storage.
A good tip i have noticed is if you are washing your coyotes out....let them dry out good before you put them on a stretcher.as it will be a day or so longer before the borax dries them out completely.

Believe it or not Borax is the same stuff some taxidermists prefer over tanning when mounting deer. It's what they call dry preservative or you may hear the slang DP used.

You really don't use a lot of borax and unless you are putting up 100's of critters, one or 2 boxes from Wally World usually lasts me a season.

i used for the first time today, and i must say im impressed. word of caution though, because it does dry faster, you will need to flip fur out faster. I caught mine just before it would have needed to be rewetted. I ussually flip around 18 hours or so, this was pretty stiff at 12 hours. pretty impressive stuff, and cheap.
