How important would you guys say it is to use some sort of spring when targeting Coyotes? Up till now I've been using KB550's that have that spring mechanism built onto the trap; Going to try some other varities of traps this year and I'm wondering if I can get away without installing a spring onto the chain?

My oppinion, its a small investment and a little time. You wont ask that question after a couple catch circles and empty traps. The way I look at it is that I want as many odds in my favor as possible to catch and hold an animal. Although anything can happen, I'm a big beleiver in that theres no reason to lose an animal once hes in your trap if youve made every effort possible to keep your equipment tip top.

If I'm targeting coyotes all my traps have a shock spring on them. No need with fox as they won't even compress the spring usually with their lunges. As already stated, small investment for a ton of piece of mind.

shock springs are not necessary to hold coyotes, "BUT" like everyone else is saying it definitely is a plus to add them. I've trapped many coyotes without using shock springs and never lost one so far, but I also use a quality made trap.

You should be fine, they smell everything at the set anyways, a little more steel odor doesn't hurt.

As long as you clean off the manufacturing oil from them you'll be fine.....they're buried anyway so color or a little wax isn't going to hide anything ;D

Most of the traps that had the springs on them were dug up... Oh well live and learn none of the KB's were
