I was asked to post on how to make a trap NY legal In NY, footholds on land MUST BE 5 3/4" INSIDE SPREAD OR SMALLERLets start with the regs from DEC : • On land, foothold traps must be 5 3/4 inches or smaller. •During beaver or otter season, foothold traps up to 7 1/4 inches are allowed if set under water. •When the beaver or otter season is closed, foothold traps set in water for mink or muskrat may not be larger than 5 3/4 inches. •A foothold trap larger than 7 1/4 inches is never legal to use. How to measure a foothold trap (from DEC) We'll use a Monty #4 as an example. Before any modification, the jaw spread is 6 1/8" The addition of 3/16" INSIDE laminations to each jaw brings the inside jaw spread to a NY legal 5 3/4". The lams can be round or square as long as the INSIDE jaw spread is 5 3/4" or smaller This particular stock trap has low levers. To make it a better coyote / cat trap, the levers were switched out to Bridger #3 levers which turn it into a high lever trap. It was baseplated, center swiveled and inside / outside jaw laminations added. Add a well swiveled chain of your choice and you have a great coyote / cat trap. No dogs to bend on a dogless trap ! ;D I hope this helps Tom
