ny farm bureau voted at its annual meeting last December 2010 to work with ny DEC and nysta to create a more common opening date west of route 8. the route 8 boundary was a political decision for mink and muskrat. this resolution came out of chenango county farm bureau where the county is cut into two zones. many raccoon are not being taken because by November 25 snow and freezing weather. Gordon batchelder at DEC and nysta have been notified and nothing has been done to change the seasons. i am a nonresident(one of 56 in 2009) and i am told that i am one of few that are happy with the current dates west of route 8. fur is prime by Nov 10. my fur was sent to Canada last year with Toby Edwards and i had no rejections for unprime muskrats and mink caught east of rte 8. i found one trapper near lake Ontario who said he only had 5 days of open water until he was froze out. western ny opening on Nov 25 is the latest in the northeast united states. i need people that are not happy spending a lot of money on gas and traveling the same roads twice when you could do it once. last year i did not start trapping until November 7.

I don't understand what you're trying to get at? Especially the part about raccoons not being taken as the majority of the raccoons harvested in NY are taken on dry land, not in the water?

THE REASON MOST RACCOON ARE CAUGHT ON LAND IS THAT WEST OF ROUTE 8 IN THE SOUTHERN ZONE WATER TRAPPING IS NOT LEGAL UNLESS BEAVER OR OTTER ARE OPEN. TRAPPERS IN THE AREA WEST OF ROUTE 8 ARE SPENDING A LOT OF MONEY ON GAS IF THEY START ON OCTOBER 25 AND THEN START WATER TRAPPING ON NOVEMBER 25. WHEN THEY DO START WATER TRAPPING FOR MINK AND MUSKRAT IF THERE IS SNOW COVER, THE RACCOON ARE IN FOR THE WINTER. IT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE FOR ME THAT NY CITY IS OPEN AND BUFFALO IS CLOSED. IN JANUARY 2011 I WENT TO ALABAMA DEER HUNTING AND LOOKED AT THE DATE MINK AND MUSKRAT OPENED. IT WAS NOVEMBER 13. I TOLD AN EMPLOYEE FROM DEC TWO YEARS AGO THAT IF THE HUMAN SOCIETY WAS SETTING THE DATES, THEY WOULD PROBABLY COME UP WITH MORE SENSIBLE DATES. HE WAS NOT HAPPY. JADE SKUNK

Like I stated before, the majority of raccoons in NY are caught on dryland, NOT in the water... so water opening dates have no bearing on raccoons trapping or opening season dates. I agree that water season's in NY should open earlier in most zones....say the 15th November
