I'm sure everyone at some time or another has had something happen to them on there trapline that they would love to forget, well this is one of them.Whew,I'm starting to sweat just thinking about it.
About 13 years ago i was trapping fox on a sod farm in orange county
The property consisted of open flat field intertwined with drainage
ditches and small woodlots, real good fox habitat.
I had already checked my other farms when i pulled on the farm lane which was a dead end.To get to the set i had to cross a high grass field and then a small creek that crossed the property, as i came out into the field i could see that i had connected with a red fox, well when he seen me he thought like they always do,to try to make a run for it,well he forgot one important thing he still had a trap on his foot and he wasn't going anywhere so i thought. So after taking some pictures, now it was time to dispatch him so i tapped him on the nose
with my trowel and then stepped on his chest which i have done so many times before but he just didn't want to die. {Disclaimer:don't try this at home} so i decided to give him a quick body slam to close the deal.So i quickly took him out of the trap and grabbed him by the hind legs and proceeded to swing him over my back to the ground below what i didn't realize was as i was swing him he woke up and started to turn in mid flight and when he was almost there
he planted his feet on the ground and took off.
Well i gotta say it took a few seconds for my pea size brain to register what had just happened,so i did the first thing that came to my mind so i started to chase him,Well the race was on.So i sprinted after him for about 100 yards i was right behind him the whole way.at first i don't think he realized i was right behind him but when he turned around to look back he had that YIKES... look on his face.So after a minute of chasing him i thought to my self ,
self now what are you going to do when you catch him because
i left my trowel at the set.Thank god there was nobody around to see this how embarrassing. So then i decided to go back and get my trowel,so i went back to the set.when i turned around to see where he was i noticed he was just laying down in the field,so i quickly grabbed my trowel and walked back to him and finished him off.So when your all done laughing and done picking yourself off the floor remember this, make sure your foxes are dead before
you take them out of the trap.
