Friday I was still trying to put some venison in the freezer, so I got out the muzzleloader for the final weekend. Weather conditions were perfect Saturday morning, with light breeze and overcast skies, so I got to the farm early to try some canine calling. Got set up about 5:45 AM and within 15 minutes in comes the grey. Took her at about 40 yards and over she goes. Not 10 minutes later, in comes the red. He came in across the same open field on almost the same trail. Was doing fine until he hit the grey carcass, then got a bit leery. He headed straight out to about 100 yards but turned when I lip squeaked. That was it for him. The red is almost twice the size of the grey, but you wouldn't know it from the pics. I had coyotes calling in the distance, so I tried hard for the trifecta, but no luck. Got to my truck, swapped guns and headed out just in time to see a nice buck across the field walking in to the woods right under my treestand at sunrise! Passed on two small does today, so looks like I'll either need to get rabbit huntin' or get a recipe for fox and yote stew!

Both of those buggers look well furred but I am always partial to the red fox.

Nope, didnt' shoot them with a smokepole. I wouldn't even shoot a coyote during deer season unless I had a gun that would save the pelt.
I got them both with my Rem. 700 VS .223 w/8.5x20 leupold shooting 40 gr. V-Max at about 3,300 fps. The load has been great for coyotes and the red and grey I got last year. These two sustained a little more pelt damage than I wanted, but nothing a little stitching didn't fix. I think I'm going to be in the market for a .17 fireball next.
Interesting on the red - much of the pelt had dark round spots on the hide once I got it skinned and fleshed. Almost looked like it took a load of birdshot at some point in it's life.
Both well furred, but now that I got them turned and brushed the red is a prime cherry with some really nice soft fur.
PS - I don't know what the red was eating lately, or what scent got added, but that son-of-a-gun had a half ejected turd hanging out during skinning that smelt worse than anything I've smelt on an animal.
