I left a fox leather out for too long, and ripped it real bad turning it..my nicest one too..I'd like to have it tanned and sewn back up, just so I can hang it on the wall...any suggestions? Local would be good, but I'd send it to a reputable place if anyone has any ideas. Thanks

Once they've ripped after they've been dried you can't fix them. You can sew them beforehand, but once dried I've never seen it done and come out good. If you get it tanned the rip will just get bigger and you'll never be able to sew it back and make it look natural.

Man that sucks...just sell it as is then huh? I can't even get it turned the rest of the way out without ripping it clean down to its head. On the back too!

Sounds like it is heavily damaged and probably won't be worth much. If this ever happens again, take a damp warm cloth and put it on the pelt to soften the leather before turning. I did he same thing on my first one and learned my lesson. We have all done something like this before . . . the lucky ones it happens on oppossums

The real solution is to buy a box or 20 mule team detergent (Borax) from Wally World for $3.00. rub the entire flesh side of the hide with it and put up your fox fur out......... no need to go flesh out for a day. Avoids having to turn the pelt altogether.

Why couldnt you re-hydrate it and then sew it and re-dry it?

Why couldnt you re-hydrate it and then sew it and re-dry it? I have about no experience sewing leather or anything else, and this rip is about the whole length of the pelt. Thats why I was hoping someone would recommend a fur processor to send to, and have them rehydrate/sew/tan

What you could do is cover that fox with borax in and out, tack it to a fox board (staples) and put it on display (fur side out). It will dry and be moth proof and won't smell, you may want to dust some borax on it a couple times/year, and at least you'll have a fox you're pround of on display. It won't last forever this way, but it will for a number of years (use to do this when I was a kid with some pelts).
Tanneries are tough on pelts, a small tear can become a large rip. So you won't have any luck in that direction

Thanks Mac, thats probably what I'll end up doing...I'd rather just be proud of it than try and get $2 out of it.
