well i finally got the chance to go set traps on teh creek i posted about couple weeks ago. they were coming out of the water and chewing on a couple fallen trees, then.
got down there today to try and set up, and there was absolutely no tracks. they had stopped coming up, and everything had frozen over. i grabbed my dispatch bat and tapped the ice and it went right through in the middle. no going out on that, especially with the warmup we are going to get.....lol
the river is only about 8ft across in most areas and 2-3 foot deep. i looked around and didn't see any feed piles around the huts either. (there are 2 huts about 25 yards apart.) i smashed the ice right at the bank where they were coming out before and saw a couple chewed sticks, but think those might have been from before ice up.
would a baited coni work right at the bank like this about 18ft from the hut, seeing how there isn't any noticeable food piles?
thanks for any oppinions. Dom

You could also try a few peeled sticks on the bank with a 330 in front of it but in the water. You'll have to fence it off so that the beavers don't just come along the side to get the bait. You may need to shovel a little cove to get the 330 in position in deep enough water. I'd stake it with a long piece of wire or chain or cable, whatever you have. That way the next beaver won't see his kinfolk in the trap. Make sure that you stake the trap so that it will be freed easily. Once the ice is gone, you can set the channels with your 330's.

Best bet if there is any open water what so ever is a castor mound set. Just set your coni in front, block it off so the beaver won't go around and place a pile of mud, etc. on the bank with a castor lure. You could place a few peeled sticks with it for added apeal too.

well i don't have the open water for the castor mound and such, everything is pretty much iced over, just not very thick, the edge of the creek has about 2 inches of ice the middle less than an inch...
i'm gonna have to try the baited coni i guess, just wondering if anyone knew if this would work being there are no feed piles around. Dom

It is supposes to be 50 here today so your ice shouldn't be much. If it as thin as you said, you could go into the creek and bust the ice up and push it out of the way. Make a large opening too so the beaver has plenty of room to surface, smell or see the bait or lure, and then swim on in.
