Okay, here is the situation. I obtained permission to trap muskrats & mink at a fish hatchery. The stream is stocked with trout, and the mink hang around eating the dead trout as they are discarded. I cannot make pocket sets in the stream, but was wondering about some sort of boxes for conibears. Anybody have any thoughts on this. Also, there are several buildings on the property that the mink frequent, so I was thinking the boxes might work there. Any ideas are welcome.
Thanks,
Bob Samuelson

Make a weasel box only with a bigger hole. You could use footholds or put pans on your conibears.

Can you use foot traps? If you can and these mink like dead trout use a pail, dead trout in it,cover hulls in pail and a 1.5 in cover hulls. Are there trails, entrences in these buildings, conibear in tral ,or in front of hole. If this doesn,t work; I will send Debbie down to help you. ;D Take care Ed

Mink like to go into holes and tunnels to investigate such places. Maybe a tunnel trap of wood or stove pipe covered with some hay or brush would do the trick. However, with the mink feeding on the trout, it would make sense to place sets like mole decribed as well, near the location of the discarded trout.

I have taken many mink on the fish-on-a-stick set.

bob, I take care of two fish hatcheries, find its more productive taking them in blind sets, little buggers have there favorite spots to drop in the ponds and pull out with a live one and back to easy cover in less than a minute, find the birds take care of the dead fish more so than the mink, also find I end up pulling more out of the adjacent brooks running parallell with the hatchery ponds than the ponds themself, one tip though set the overflow\ drain pipes that empty the ponds or tanks into the brook, when needed to drain them, if your ponds or tanks are set up that way, dry or not, they like holing up\running them............jim

I guess I misunderstood Bob's intentions. I assumed he couldn't use foothold or conibears out in the open when he said that he couldn't make pocket sets.

My experience is that mink are blatant killers; will kill trout after trout without eating them. Often they stash the dead fish under something. I do take them in boxes with chunks of muskrat as bait. Be sure to run a piece of fine cable wire between the trigger wires as they have an ability to squeeze between without firing the trap. I also use tunnel traps along banks of the feeder brooks and take quite a few blind setting the overflow pipes. Frequently they have tunnels in the snow which can be blind set.

Wayne, this is something for next year. I cannot use pockets or foot traps as people, with kids & dogs, will be visiting. Thats why I am thinking about the newspaper tubes.
