It seems to me,and thanks to the auction reports that we get on this site as well as Traperman, that the auctions in the past and I bet this year as well ,will find that the auctions held in the eastern part of the state pay a much higher price for furs than in the western part of the state. I wonder why this is so.Could it be the way the auctions are run, presentation of furs,or that the eastern auctions attract buyers from NYC that the western auctions dont which in turn drive up the bidding? What do you guys think? Does any of the auctions have buyers place a bid on trappers complete lots of furs ?

Good questions Herm ???The auctions I Have been to here in the Central and Eastern parts of the state seem to hold true what you have said. I have never seen them offer complete lots of a trappers collection before, it has always been diveded out by the trappers themselves into different lots based on what they thought was equal fur quality. As for the NYC connection, some fur sale have had NYC buyers and some haven't, I know that in April last year at the Little Falls, NY sale that the price of mink was drivien up by NYC men but that isn't always the case. I believe that all the sales are pretty much run the same way, it a crap shot sometimes on what buyer show up as well.

Herm, I don't usually sell my fur at the auctions. I'm taking my fur to show a local buyer this afternoon. If he doesn't offer what I'm looking for I'm going to the Honeoye auction in the morning.
I plan on dropping 82 red fox hides on the table in one shot. Am I nuts? I'm afraid if I grade them out I may end up not seeing the average I'm looking for.
Or am I really better off separating them? Any advice?
I've also heard the Little Falls sale is a good one. Gotta be 4 1/2 hrs. from here though and it aint worth driving down there.....not this year at least.

Rick, Definatly grade out your fur yourself. Even if you sell it in one lot it will give you an idea of what it's worth. If you go to a fur sale, definatly grade it out yourself, it makes a HUGE difference. You mentioned that it wasn't worth it to drive to Little Falls for the auction there, I think it would be for you. Consider this, you average $1 more per fox at the sale, that $82 more than you would have received and you get to spend the day talking trapping. From Alden to Little Falls it shouldn't be more than 3 1/2 hours; staight shot down the Thruway. I have always done very good with my reds getting almost NAFA high prices for most of them. Just something to consider ;D

Thing is Wayne, I'm ONLY interested in my average price. Could care less about the high end......What are they ALL worth?
If I grade into lots I'm afraid I'll sell some high, some low, and not meet my average.
Seem to remember it taking about 4 hrs. to Herkimer.....may be remembering it wrong though.

A lot depends on the quality of your fox. If you have 2 or 3 fox out of 80 that are lower grades it shouldn't hurt you very much, a good buyer will overlook a few bastards. However, if you have a lot of color varation's or damaged good and you mix them in , that will screw you big time. It's amazing what you will get if you take a little time and divide your good stuff from your not so good stuff, that is unless all you have is good stuff. For instance....30 absolute XL cherry reds, 50 average reds and 2 junk. Say you get $30@ for the cherrys, 20@ for the average's and 10@ for the junk. That comes out to be $1,920. Now if you put them all together and only receive a $22 average you just lost over $100. To each his own but I think it's worth a few minutes to separate. As far as time, I guess it depends on driving habits I can make it from Utica, NY to Newfane, NY in exactly 3 hours, Little Falls is about another half an hour East of Utica. Whatever you decide let us know how you make out!

Lot of early caught, low end stuff. Some top end fox.....but alot of junk too. A regular trapper's collection I guess. Sent 100 to Fur Harvester's last year and they didn't seem to care for 'em much.
Thanks for the advice though. I'm hoping my buyer will pay me what I'm looking for. If not, when I get home tonight I'll grade 'em into lots. I suppose I could still change my mind in the morning and just drop 'em all on the table.
I prefer the personal, one on one transaction. I know him, he knows me....but, I gotta pretty firm price in my head....so maybe I'll see some of you guys at Honeoye in the morning.
