I am not 100% sure, but I am 99.9% sure it is 21. And at 21, you can apply for a full unrestricted permit. wether or not you get one is up to the judge in your county that is assigned your application. Unless you live in NYC, 99% of the time they give you some sort of restricted permit as long as you have a clean record. Full carry is not given out very often, but the sportsmens license is not the worst thing in the world. it pretty much covers all of the reasons I would have to own a pistol.

As a FFL I know for a fact that in NYS the age would be 21, here is a link to Packing.org for more information on carrying a pistol in. www.packing.org/state/new_york/

The age is twenty one (21) unless: To apply you must be twenty-one years of age or older, provided, however, that where such applicant has been honorably discharged from the United States army, navy, marine corps, air force or coast guard, or the national guard of the state of New York, no such age restriction shall apply.

i read that but that but that is for an ownership of a pistol and the right to carry it. Applications shall be made and renewed, in the case of a license to carry or possess a pistol or revolver, to the licensing officer in the city or county, as the case may be, where the applicant resides, is principally employed or has his principal place of business as merchant or storekeeper."i want to know (and cant find on that website) if you can just shoot for fun while 18 with a permit of its own,by the way i called the sherrifs in my county and he said 18 and you could get one it's really confusioning!

Here you go! You can handle and shot one, with certain limitations, but cannot obtain a permit for one. Persons between age 18 and 20 may possess and use a handgun at an indoor or outdoor pistol range located in or on premises owned or occupied by a duly incorporated organization organized for conservation purposes or to foster proficiency in small arms or at a target pistol shooting competition under the auspices of or approved by the NRA and while under the immediate supervision, guidance and instruction of a certified instruction and while possessing or using the instructor's licensed handgun.www.nysrpa.org/nygunlaws.htm
