Is anyone, that has to modify their 330's (southern tier) finding more traps that are sprung and empty?? I seem to find more empty traps than ever before, and now I guess there are a lot of Beavers that have jumped from kindergarten right to Junior in college. These are sets put in a narrow channel that are just a bit deeper than the 330 is tall. I know muskrat tails can trip it, but a few have even had some fur stuck around the jaws.

Actually I haven't been experiencing any sprung 330's with the new trigger regs. That's probably because I've seen a darn otter anywhere near where I trap!

The areas I trap are longer than yours Tim but I still have to follow the trigger regs in the one WMU. So really I have two sets of 330's to use. I don't have to and don't use the modified traps in the other WMU I trap. But I just have to be careful with what traps I bring with me.

I've had a couple fired without anything in them but I think I had a smart one, and believe it was going over the trap. I put two traps in that same run and put a stick with castor lure on it in between and that solved that problem. Diverted its attention apparently. The bad part for me has been the suitcased beaver. The one I had went 38 lbs on my fish scale. It takes waaaay to long for that trap to fire with tension on it and the bigger opening. The beaver didn't die quick either as the pelt leather has rub marks on it and fur came out on the pelt side where the leather was marked. Also, and I'll admit it even if a biologist sees this, I caught muskrats in my 330's with the modification.

Bobber, can you decrease the tension on the traps to help with the suitcasing? I don't have a whole lot of tension on my traps.

I'm really not running much if any tension either ,but was messing around with it a bit as a learning experiment. I was using species specific triggers on four of the traps I used ,and I used Berkshire replacements on the other two. I drilled and tapped the Berkshires like in the DEC modification links that are posted. One thing I found was that because you have to push that trigger so far to the side of the trap to maintain the eight inches, it is right up againist the bend in the jaws. Because of this you get some drag againist that corner, regardless of what tension you put on the trigger screws. I'm using the Duke or Victor 330's. The rats I caught were caught by the butt . I mention it as I think it would be a d@mn lucky otter that wouldn't fire the trap. Spencer, I forgot to mention that I also used a stout dive stick over the traps also. That helped with the climb overs and push throughs.

What the DEC and it seems many trappers dont realize is that you have allways been able to set the tension on body grips by selecting which notch you use on the dog. Bobber,In my opion you should keep your comments about what you are catching in your 330's off this forum. In the past the DEC has used information about this subject to come up in part of the regulations we are now dealing with.Your type of comments could very well lead to more regulations effecting which traps we may use and how we may use them.

Herm, the fact is, the trigger regulation is a stupid thing and I will call a spade a spade. I don't like this regulation, and I think I'm entitled to comment on what I percieve as it's shortcomings and my experiences trapping beaver with the modified traps. The forums are full of opinions or we'd have nothing to talk about. I am as entitled to mine just as you are to yours. If you think that the DEC will change their mind about anything on the opinions offered by any one trapper on here you really ought to get some different koolaid to drink. It's like saying that anti-trappers care about what we trap with.
