NIghtlatching is done by filing both the dog and pan notch. It makes for a much shorter throw and crisper fire. It is one simple modification that is worth doing to all footholds.

When I was young and impresionable ;D,I did the night latch thing but since have graduated to a short crisp throw by just filing the notch in the pan very short and a slight angle to the dog, no step in the pan notch.
This setup works for my style of trapping canines.

I do the night -latch on all my traps except canine traps now. For those, I finally spent the bucks and bought Paws-I-Trip kits. Best money I ever spent on a modification to a canine or beaver trap . When I night latch , I file a small step above the big notch in the pan and just square the dog up. The notch is around a 1/16" deep, usually will hold up for a couple seasons before it needs to be touched up. I think it does help me achieve consistant trap performance.
