Can anyone tell me a good set for coyote that will help a beginner? We have alot of coyote here they are killing the deer, rabbits, sheep anything small. The framers would like me to catch as many as i can. I have try to catch 1 and i have failed so many times. I have tried post set dirt hold set but i know that being a beginner has alot to do with it. I sometime think that i must contaminate my tools which will keep a coyote away. When i get near a creek i always wash my tools every time i get. I have about 3,000 acer to trap between 6 framers which is great but i don't know what to do. Because i don't wont to let them down, i did tell them that this is my first year trapping.

Well the dirt hole set is probably the easiest set for anyone to master and as long as you haven't contaminated you traps or equipment with lure or food odors you should alright. The cleaner the better for your traps and equipment but you will never convince a coyote that you weren't there. One of the biggest things you have to consider when trapping any animal is can it find the set? Since the prevailing wind direction is usually west or NW here, you trap should always be set where the wind will blow the scent across the animals travel path. You can't catch an animal that doesn't visit your set and and animal won't visit your set if it doesn't know it's there. After that, make sure that your trap is bedded solidly, by that, I mean if the 'yote approaches your set and steps on the jaw and it moves under his foot, he will be gone or dig up your trap. Try and set your trap so the center of the pan is back 7"-9" back and off-center about 2" from the baithole. That way, when the 'yote approaches your set, his foot will be right on top of your pan when he steps in to investigate your set. This time of year a good bait down the hole and a call lure are gold, with all the snow and cold the call lure will bring them in and the bait gives them the easy mael they are looking for. Try to make more than one set per location and vary them a little, one dirt hole one post set, or 2 dirt holes, one with a big hole and one with a small hole, etc. The best way to learn is to have someone either show you or watch a video as that old saying goes, "a picture is worth a thousand words" holds so true. Good luck!

trapperjohn,At your sets is anything happening? Do you have sign of cyotes? Can you show a picture of your area, your sets? Maybe its just a location problem. I am sure someone here could help you,but all the information you could prvide would sure help. I am sitting here trying to visualise your problem, but I dont know what else to say. any cyote book has pictures and descriptions of sets that work if put at the proper location. Ed

I have had the same trouble in the area that I am now trapping. And I believe that it is location. I have kept my tools clean and traps clean. And still nothing. But there was no fresh sign around my traps either. I haven't figured out how to get ahead of them yet. It seems like my sets are a day late. Location and timing are everything it seems. But I'm just a beginer as you!

I am also having trouble with 'yotes, Is it possilbe to catch one in a 1 1/2 or are they to small? I only have 1 1/2 victor traps which i got to trap fox and coons but i have had some close calls with 'yotes, will they work?
PS This weather is making things difficult.

A #1 1/2 will hold a 'yote most of the time if you get him right across the pad. I have caught a few 'yotes in #1 1/2's, most were in Monty's, but a few B & L's too. The problem you will run into probably though is the 'yote will destroy the trap because the frames and jaws aren't meant for that type of abuse. I prefer #2 Monty's & Briders with the 1.75 Victor's and #1 3/4 Northwoods a close second, espicially where fox and coon are present. If you can set the trap up on a drag you will have better luck holding him because he won't be able to get a good solid pull.
