Fifth trip to the Keys with a good friend of mine a week ago and thought I'd share a few photos. Fishing with the same guide but out of his new boat this year. Our guide Captain Diego Cordova out of Marathon, Florida. This trip we spent three of the five days in the back country on the gulf side. First time using my new 8 wt. rod JC built for me in saltwater. Casting to a school of permit a hungry barracuda took the crab fly. Here I'm getting confident I'll have a picture of it with the new rod. But a shark comes out of nowhere and inhales a 15# cudda... But another one was eager to eat and we were able to boat it. My friend JC with a nice size permit on a fly. My first permit on a fly after five trips. JC with a shark that finally broke him off. A very enjoyable trip again. It's a long time until next spring to do it again...

Glad you enjoyed the photos. Very few snook in most of the places we fish. We normally have fair luck on the bones but they were nowhere to be found, our guide thinks the cold waters this past winter took a toll on many of them. We chased tarpon each day, small ones in the back country and the large migrators on the ocean side. Many opportunities over five days, got four to eat but didn't land any.

Sounds like all my tarpon adventures. I fished for them many times from a kayak (cant navigate the water even in a flats boat with the tide change) on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Infested with black flies, 90 deg heat, and never landed one had some on for a while screaming drag on the 10 weight. Some dont even know the Tarpon migrate up that far North but they are there every July. Had an interesting story with barracuda spear fishing at Chesapeake Bay Light Tower for spade fish with a Hawaiian spear gun. Dove in, swimming around and saw a few cuda and had one coming full force at me looked down and realized i still had my watch on (shiny silver) it would have bit my arm but didnt realize i could swim that fast:) Those are some nice looking permit. How did you do on the red drum???speckled trout or seatrout i think they call them in FL??

I didn't realize tarpon made it that far up the coast either. Tarpon on a fly in a kayak sounds like it could get very interesting? I would hate to get hit by a barracuda, sounds like your luck held out. My daughters boyfriend uses a sling for hogfish, etc. Looks like it could be fun but I'm not a strong swimmer so haven't tried it yet.
I've fished for trout on the gulf coast side, not sure if they're around in the areas we fish on our trips to Marathon.
