I’m thinking about doing a solo black bear hunt in the Adirondacks this year.. I am curious if anyone has ever hunted bear and had success there? What features should I look for in the land? What’s the best time of the season to hunt them? I am planning on canoeing in and camping.. any help would be great! Thanks guys!

Just this: If you hear banjos, paddle faster!!! Whereabouts in the Adirondacks? It's 6 plus million acres. Narrowing it down would help. Maybe go to the DEC website and lookup bear harvest by county/town, if you haven't already decided. Or just google "dump locations in the Adirondacks" lol! Myself, I'd go for the early bear season. Only drawbacks are bugs and warm weather.

Lol ill paddle as fast as I can if I heard banjos! I’m actually thinking about around long lake or tupper lake... just thought it be fun to try and canoe to a location and sneak into a stand... no clue what the success rate of it is? And I would like to do the early season but I wonder if the bears are more actively moving later into November

Like looking for a needle in a haystack, but the fun part is just doing it. Couple friends and I used to go up every year during the early season, we wanted good fishing and good camping weather when there. We put ourselves into good bear areas when there, but we never took a bear and didn't really care. Go with low expectations and you'll enjoy it. We had a few good sightings but never a good shot. But the fishing was great and we had fun. We'd also canoe and a couple times packed in. If I was looking at Long Lake I would put in at the village launch, head to the north end and on the eastern side before hitting the raquette river there is good state land and at least 2 leantos in the area. Head into the river and there is a good leanto back there that I have stayed at before, really gamey around there. That time of year the smallmouth bass and northerns can be fun at that end of the lake.

YES! That area at the North end of Long Lake gets very wild!! The Cold River flows into the Raquette there. E J Dailey trapped up the Cold River a lot. I have canoed there a few times and the only issue you may have is that the water may be too low in the Cold, for canoe passage this time of year. BUT, there is a leanto right near the intersection of the 2 rivers. Bring lots of Bacon and fry it on your campfire. Load your rifle! Look both ways at the same time!! LOL

Have you ever seen bears on the shore line while canoeing? Does that bacon thing actually work? And i would wonder if the dec would get you for baiting lmao 😂

No, the bacon - and the warning - were about US lol!!! I LOVE BACON! But yeah - bacon, vanilla, burning Karo syrup, other stuff is sometimes to bears what catnip is to cats.
