Hey Guys as always i learn a lot from reading your posts, especially papabear. I am reading up on preserving baits and from papabears recipes it is easy to follow. my question is with what type of glycerine to use, does it matter. I see on a papabear post a pic of glycerine jug on his workbench that looks like vegetable based, i saw it available at amazon for less than $20/gallon, its food grade. On some of the supply websites i see it more expensive and io think its animal fat based? Is one thicker than the other, does it really matter since we are using it as a preservative agent with the S-Benz? I am starting out at this game so want to get the right stuff and your advice is greatly appreciated. I am guessing the vegetable based is perfectly Ok for us when mixed like papa says with the sodium benzoate. Thoughts please?

Dear Friend, I use food grade glycerin as it has been processed to its purest form. I'm also big for mixing glycerin 50/50 with 100 proof vodka and here's my reasoning. For most lure and bait making, glycerin is used mainly as an anti-freeze and a binder/blending and stabilizing agent. At best, by itself glycerin has mild preserving and anti-freezing qualities. 100 proof vodka when mixed with glycerin greatly enhances those properties and because of the volatile nature of the vodka, it adds significant lift to the odor of the lure or bait its mixed with. However the vodka (alcohol) itself will evaporate quickly if used alone. Glycerin stabilizes and slows the evaporation of the vodka allowing the odor to disperse for a longer periods of time both during warmer, early fall and freezing winter condition.
For personal use I rarely add glycerin, glycerin/vodka mix to a "preserved" bait until the temps get down to freezing or below as I feel it has no added value to the odor and is simply a waste of materials. I use glycerin - glycerin/vodka mostly when preparing materials/ingredients to be used in concoctions.
Regards
