My longtime friend and former NYSTA president Willard "Bill" Smith passed on yesterday. Ive known Bill for almost 40 yrs. and hes had such an impact on my life especially as a younger man. Always looked up to Bill as he shared so much about trapping, fishing.hunting with me and so many others. He always had an interest in our youth and getting them involved in the outdoors. Bill was from an era of men that we just don't see to often in this world anymore. My heart is a bit heavy this evening after finding out this news but I then think of Bill and who he was, what he stood for and how so many people loved him and i smile. My condolences and prayers to the Smith family and all those who knew Bill.

Bill was also a zone rep for the NYS Houndsmen. He for years would bring fishing poles to the banquet to give away to youths.

Bill was a mentor of mine as well - in many ways. A true Gentleman. There is no one I have ever met that was as strong an advocate for trapping - or any other outdoor recreational activity, as Bill Smith. Never once did I hear him yell or attack anyone personally. His actions and integrity garnered respect from sportsmen, the DEC, NYCDEP and other - even when they disagreed. He will be deeply missed.
