i'm new to trapping. not sure if all trappers are the same, but i am starting to get fed up. i post on here questions, not many comments because i'm new to trapping so not much experience. But why do so many people look at posts and not comment? Thinking most people just want any free advice they can find and don't want to help.

Hello, I believe there are reasons why some don't post,
Some feel they have nothing positive to offer Some don't want to share their wisdom some are looking for free advice
and a host of other reasons known only to them
If you have a question, ask.

I read every thread on here but may not comment for I don't have as much knowledge as many here if I have a opinion I will chime in otherwise I just like to try and learn from others posts as well

Part of it is social media, many of those who at one time posted on here frequently now talk trapping via that avenue. Posting on a forum indicates that you're a dinosaur, not with the 21st century, as some on here have implied. There are some that have put down the forum, probably making others self conscience about posting. Some think it's beneath them probably. A recent post, since deleted, claimed that the new people on here ruined the forum, certainly not something I agree with. If not for the new guys it'd be quieter than it already is. Used to be a busy place.
And Mole touched on reasons as well. Some prefer to just lurk. It's a quiet forum these days, if you post and ask something you'll just have to be patient and wait.

Funny you bring this up. I've long been one of the lurkers. This year I decided to post more, as others have said it's been quiet here lately. I've heard it's a Facebook thing. Which has me wondering about Walleyed, haven't heard much from him on here lately.....has he joined the crowd?

Which has me wondering about Walleyed, haven't heard much from him on here lately.....has he joined the crowd? walleyed would sooner drown in the marshes of Pulaski NY than join Facebook. He's one of those crusty curmudgeons who is closed-minded about change. I for one would prefer to post on message boards solely but what's the point? Every single thread with zero exceptions will eventually get derailed by trolls that as the OP you cannot control. That's not a problem at all in FB... if those same anti-social loners tried that there, everyone would block them and they'd have no audience. As for views versus posts here, keep in mind that many of the viewers have been here for years, some live in other states. So if a question comes up concerning basic trapping, it's been addressed umpteen times before and veterans are sick of repeating. If the question is NY specific, a lot of active readers have no comment because they don't live here. fwiw Facebook is no different. Some of my posts there get 100+ likes but only 5 to 20 comments. Or less. Human nature is the same everywhere, only a majority will ever comment on anything because of the extra effort involved. If they aren't compelled to do so for some personal reason=benefit, they won't

I don't think it's Facebook....for everyone. I am TERRIFIED to post on Facebook (barn pics, catch pics, tailgate shots)....everyone is connected and not EVERYONE's "friends" on FB are into what we are into.....and no one has assured me that pics shown on a trapping page there STAY there....
I had a barn pic get shared and it spread like wildfire, with my name attached to it, and I started getting the crazy people commenting on the pic....
I am not ashamed one bit of what we do, but I think there are things that we do that many people aren't crazy about.
In the end, the internet runs its course for many, and after awhile, posting a lot wanes in importance.
Most questions I get are PM's......and I answer them. I think......
My newest, fun part about being on the forums is my trapping "friends" are going around to MY farms and telling people I am not trapping any more around here! When the farmer says: "Yes he is" my "buddies" say: No, he isn't!
I guess I thought that was up to me to discuss?
With friends like that, who needs enemies??? LOL

LOL MZ I have a personal FB account for the yuppie crowd and a trapping-specific FB no different than membership in a message board. That FB belongs to a number of large closed groups so my news feed there has hundreds and hundreds of outdoor-related pics and posts each day. Of course there is a sprinkling of personal tmi mixed in, but how does that differ from any large message board with trappers who post about anything but trapping all day & night? As for antis and pics lifted, that can be done as easily from here or tman as FB. Both message boards are open to public, anyone can right-click any photo and save to their computer in two seconds flat. As for the trapline poachers grinching your permissions? We thought that's what those burger-eating terriers of yours are for

I'm not talking anti's......I know they have access to all of our stuff here...
I am talking about your sister in CA, my brother-in-law in Phoenix....and all the billions of connections we have simply by LIKING and SHARING stuff on our sites....your sister in CA doesn't come on this site.....but if YOU share something on your timeline of mine, then she sees it.....let's say she LIKE's it...now all of her friends see it.....
The more chess moves away you move, the more watered down the crowd is.....and it only takes seconds. When you first post the pic, 90% of the people looking at it are trappers....by the end of the day, 99% that see it aren't......
Look at ANY video on social media and how fast it spreads like wildfire, and how fast social media indicts the person in the video (cops, bad baby sitters, trappers releasing a lynx....)
Again, I got burnt....so not speculating here. I have asked the same question 100 times and I get the same answers....
So, I don't do the FB thing with pics....regardless of the page.

That former thread that trappermac refered to kinda had me puzzeled..I took the heat from someone (who since i have been a member here) i had never seen post a comment in well over a year.Since i joined this site i have read every post current and many of the posts from the past that the topic interested me. I like this site and have found it very informative and educating and at times comical .

Austin, in my case it's not the effort to post , it's more of not wanting to say the wrong thing. How was the trapping up north? Glad you were able to help Bob with his troubles.
Mark, I have a couple kid's I've helped out with traps, lure and such over the last few years. Even had them ride along. This year the kid has his own wheels and went to a couple of the farms I trap asking for permission. One of these farmers knew I'd helped him and scolded him for even asking. Told him he better come tell me or he would. Kid learned a good lesson. Talk about friends?

Austin....I am not reaching you.
But what about your 1300 trapping friends....they don't have separate pages...they just have their one and only page.
Then, you post something.....THEY like it or share it, and the wildfire starts.
It's not where the pic starts (your trapping page) its where it finishes!!
Wharton.. ...I get it, and certainly don't operate in a vacuum up here. I just find it funny that the asking trappers represent that they know me, and that we are friends...but are asking permission on farms they KNOW are mine.
Its like me hitting on your wife, but reassuring her that its OK since you and I are friends!!!! LOL

Glad you were able to help Bob with his troubles weather's been tough and the rat population up there is lighter than what we have here, but I'm having fun and getting in full production shape for the real season 11/25 opener here Bob always has issues, I was glad to help when needed and it's always a pleasure visiting with him in person. He's one of the more educated and knowledgeable people in our pursuit here... I do more listening than talking with him. Dragging his bigger canoe up several flights of concrete stairs might be pushing our limits, however <lol>

Zagman yes, I fully get you... your desire is to be Mark on FB and zagman in the trapping world. I agree photo-sharing is easier there, my point was it's possible anywhere. I'm on FB because that is where the vast majority of outdoor pics and posts are... and there is no changing that fact. Going forward, it will only increase.

I usually only comment on a post when I have something to offer. Usually the question has been answered, or it's not worth commenting on, or it doesn't interest me. I'm not sure about it being a Facebook issue. I wouldn't join facebook if I was forced at gunpoint. It's a poisonous, invasive entity that the government uses to spy on us.

Marks, a 100% right. Don't get me wrong I don't mind fb at all . If I had a barn pic like a few of you do every year I would careless if it got back to the pope . Facebook does spread like herpes before I was on fb my mother had posted a pic of a couple bucks I had shot so family outa state could see. Mean while my phone is blowing of the hook from people that seen that pic that are not remotely friends with my mom. Meanwhile I had know idea of her posting it.So if I post it on fb I really don't care who see it ! To answer your original question that began this conversation , bring up anything about deer season, antler restriction , crossbow, farm permits and youth season. And rest sure it will be four pages long ! Good luck to you all

I think Mark is correct, that forums seem to run their course. Years ago I was a moderator on a Fender guitar forum (another passion, guitar)which was very popular, it died out after a few years. I don't do FB either, never have. So I find the forum a nice diversion at work to check on at times when I need it as I'm on a computer 75% of my day at work....need to divert at times.... "one of those crusty curmudgeons who is closed-minded about change" - no, not at all. Just a different set of priorities and values for some.

Years ago I enjoyed trapper message boards and looked forward to quality time spent chatting it up in fun-filled, positive fashion. But over time I realized it wasn't any fun... every thread I was part of AND likewise threads I was no part of all self-grenade themselves in time. Even now that reality appears to be worse than ever before on the big message boards. Last time I checked into tman, Mark June had just unregistered his membership and left directly due to constant harassment by some pseudo-trappers that worship other popular figures in the predator trapping clique'.
There is not a more happy go lucky, positive attitude, fun loving goofball in our industry than Mark June. If he can be driven to the point of utter disgust and abandonment of a big trapper message board, what does that say about the genre' in general?
That s(tuff) never happens in FB... if some pear-shaped losers try to give someone grief, they get blocked and kicked to the gutter where they belong. I myself have higher standards and personal values than dealing with negative riff-raff of any such ilk.
End of admin problems, end of story.

It has been a lot of work rat trapping but I am getting some of my share, and I hope to trap a few Foxes, and beaver before long. walleyed
