Hello All,
My name is Joe Emmi and I am a senior at Paul Smiths College. For my senior thesis (capstone) I am researching the economic trends of subsistence hunting and trapping within the Adirondack Region. I have made up a short questionnaire for anyone who traps and lives in the Adirondacks. This information will help me understand more about the life of the trapper in this region. Your names or any personal information will not be used for the research so please leave nothing behind! Thank you and good luck on the trap line!
1. Please state your age and sex.
2. Where do you live? (County, Town, or City)
3. Is trapping what you do for a living?
4. Do you sell your furs or do you trap for wildlife management or as a hobby?
5. If you sell your furs, do you sell to a private dealer or to the fur auctions?
6. As of today, what are the highest priced furs on the market?
7. How do the prices fluctuations every year change your methods/ways of trapping? (Time in the field?)
8. Could you see the Adirondack/North Country, in terms of trapping, be an economical gain in terms of subsistence in today’s society? Why or why not?
9. What would make the trapping industry better?
10. What makes the trapping industry rough to stay in or get in to in terms of economic trends?
11. Do you believe trapping is a dying breed in the Adirondacks/North Country? Does economics have to do with the decline of the 21st century trapper?
Definitions:
Subsistence: The action of supporting oneself at a base level.
Wildlife Management: The art of making land produce sustained annual crops of wild game for recreational use. For example- Trapping coyotes in order to increase turkey populations.
21st Century: The years 2000-2099
Economic Trend: The overall direction on which a nation’s economy (money) is moving.
