hi I am new to this site. my home state is nj and where I do all my trapping. in nj we mainly snare fox, coon and also mink and beaver and also 110's on up for our water trapping, and this year will be our first year being able to use dp's. needless to say being from nj I don't/cant own real steel. I kind of have the itch to trap a few days somewhere different and target some different fur, really just a change of seenery. I would really like to target fisher, otter, maybe martin and cats. does anyone know of a reasonable guide in ny,

I remember coming across information on one guide providing trapping trips but have no idea who it was. Here is a link to the NYS Outdoor Guides Association website www.nysoga.comAlso, the non-resident license is $275.

I have done several vacation trap lines in the mountains, never had a guide, catch most of the furs you mention accept martin. I would plan a camping trap line with a boat or canoe. Good luck

If you live close to Vernon, NJ you can trap Pochuck State Forest in Pine Island, NY. From there by boat you can trap the Pochuck Creek BUT make sure you head North. The Jersey Line is only a few yards South. If your further North then you can hit the Bashakill.
Other than the Appalachian Trail Corridor (not recommended) than there isn't much you can trap without a guide which I don't think you'll find anyhow. Anything below Warwick, NY along the border down to NYC won't provide trappable public lands. Despite the numerous acres of State Forests.

Would imagine access to private property where footholds could be used since he can't possess them in NJ.
Agree on Pochuck but it's the only state trappable lands in that area.

yea there is a couple of reason the main reason being I don't want to go out and buy a bunch of traps at this point that I cant bring back to nj, I would have to find a place in pa or ny to store them. secondly you have fisher and cats that we cant trap in nj, we do have otter and a lottery season for them but the chance of pulling a permit is like winning the lottery and getting one in a prime zone is even harder and I am unfamiliar with their habits, third reason there is really no way at this point for me to head up there before the season starts to scout the way I would like, being I would only have a couple or a few days to trap.

I think you're not understanding your laws in NJ. You can posses foot hold traps. You just can't use them. You're still free to hang them in your garage.

slyfox74 you cant even possess them in nj, the only way you can possess them without getting busted is if you are turning them over to police or f&g or if you are using them for a approved educational institute or if the jaws are welded shut so they are inopperal. many of been hammered in nj for having them hanging on their mantal in this state

pg 67 of the compendium. Traps, Leg-hold It is illegal to possess or use steel-jawed leghold traps anywhere in New Jersey.

I just looked it up. I'm nauseated. You may not even posses a leg hold trap in the entire state even in your home as a wall hanger. I hope everyone remembers that if Governor Christie gets nominated to run on the republican ticket. That's sickening to think that a state could make a law like that. I think REDNECK said it best that law is asinine.

They did back in the late 80's. Wouldn't be surprised if they lose foot encapsulating traps by next year.
