Deer?

Some of my sets look like a deer step on the trap. The chain was stretched out , no catch circle. Is this a common problem? Any way to prevent this?

Doug hit it on the head....urine is very attractive to deer. I haven't used urine at my sets in years just for that reason....unless of course I'm making a urine post set

Gland lure has urine in it. lures also have Tonquin in them. which is a Great deer attractant. among other lures.. look in catalogs for lure making ingredients and see how many are deer attractants.

Ed....you're very correct! Tonquin is actually from the musk deer in Asia...well, it used to be,now it's all synthetic.

I should have continued but I didn't. I honestly believe that if you are not using urine because of deer that you are in fact limiting yourself.

I wont use it at a dirt hole, also gland lure , I wont use at a dirt hole. To me it says Pee on it. as opposed to smell lick taste.. I am no expert , and just my thoughts.

If you set the edges of cut cornfields you're going to have deer step in your sets urine or no urine IMO. Some of my sets that I put in the area surrounding is covered with deer tracks. You get three deer walking along that edge that's 12 legs that can trip that trap. Odds are if you set in high deer traffic areas deer will find the trap lured or not. I use gland lure and urine at all of them, I have deer step in them but I also catch fox in them and I don;t think I'd get the fox without the lure and urine. MO.

When I first started, I used 1.75 traps. I had traps set off by deer all the time just as you are describing. On the advice of zagger, I switched to #3's. Darned if the snapped traps did not stop, and I started catching coyotes. I use urine all the time. Just my opinion.

AJ, Why do you think the deer don't step on the larger trap? That sounds like it aught to work the other way around, all else being equal.

Hmmmm, I guess my thinking is that a lot of sprung traps that people consider "deer" are actually big footed coyotes that step half way on a small trap.
